At the entertainment given by the
RlilK of tho high school last Saturday,

There will be services in the German
language at the Congregational church

pastor.
The ship Tillie E. Starbuck, hence
with grain, for Queenstown for orders,
was spoken in latitude 33.37 south, lon
gitude 128 west.
Fourteen Chinamen appeared before
the deputy collector of Internal revenue
yesterday for registration, and several
hundred more are to be heard from.
The announcement Is made that J. W.
Crow, of this city, and Miss Nellie Spen
cer, of Forest Grove, will be united in
marriage on the 21st inst.
The northwest wind yesterday was
welcomed as an indication of fine
weather in the near future, although
complaints were numerous about the
fall in the temperature.
Collector Page, Judge Bowlby and C.
R. Thomson, of the committee of direc
tion of the railroad subsidy, left for
Portland last evening for the purpose
of arranging for the signing of the rail
road contract.
The members of Quinlin lodge of Elks
are making elaborate preparations for
the social session on the 27th, when
the annual installation of officers will
take place. The affair promises to be a
great treat 'to those who are fortunate
enough to secure Invitations.

The relatives of the late James Dal
glty desire to acknowledge receipt of
numerous messages of condolence, and
to express their thanks to the many
friends whose sympathy softened to
some extent the cruel blow which the
death of Mr, Dalgity Inflicted.
The Danish bark Adolph Harboe, 1,
Out tons, arrived in yesterday, 29 days
from Yokohama, in ballast. The Har
boe Is understood to have been 203 days
from Europe to Yokohama, and arrived
here In charge of the first officer, the
captain having died from scurvy before
reaching Japan.
A. Carnahan, from Olney, wa3 In the
city yesterday on his way home from
Clateop. Mr. Carnahan came to this
part of the country In 1847, when there
were only two white womep In Astoria,
Mrs- Welsh and Mrs. Ingalls. He says
he expects to soon see the railroad con
necting Astoria with the rest of the
United States, and he will not have long
to wait.
A letter has been received from Capt.
Vattp, of thtf bark ractolus, dated at
Klngroad, England, February 17, which
states that the actual passage from the
Columbia river to Queenstown was
made in 115 days, and this with the
foretop gallantma8t lost on the voyage.
When Capt. Watts wrote he was wait
ing for more water in the Avon, so he
could get up the river to Bristol.
The praise service last night at the Y.-
M. C. A. hall was well attended. A
good choir was in attendance, and the
spirited singing, Interspersed with co
gent remarks and apt Illustrations,
seemed to enthuse the entire audience.
Within 45 minutes 52 testimonies were
giyen, eight songs were sung and ten
curt, forclbje speeches were sandwiched
la by the preachera. Services begin to
jilght at 7:3Q.

bath: At 11 a. m., sermon by Dr. Bush
on pr. Subject: "On This Rook I Build

At 6:30 Evangelist Ford will conduct an

It was learned yesterday that Peter
Frnnet, one of the proprietors of the
St. Louis saloon, on Third street, was
"stood up" a few days ago by two
masked highwaymen. During the day

when he went home to dinner. After
had been unable to go to the city hall,

this precautionary measure he is now
$250 richer, for on going home after
closing un his Place of business the two
would-be robbers pounced upon him.

ceeded to search his Dockets. "Where
did you put your money?" asked one.
Franet answered that he had none,
when the taller of the two robbers re
plied: "You had some today." Fail
ing to get any booty, one of the men
then Btruck Franet in the face and the
other threw him forward on his face on
the street. The robbers then decamped,
and Franet Dlcked himself un nnd
reached home badly frightened and in
a fainting condition. The matter was
not reported to the officers until the
next day, and so far no clew has been I
