THE DAILY ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, TUESDAY MORNING, MARCH 13, 1893. . MR; CONN TIE-ELECTED. i Dr. Kinney Defeated, After a : Hard Fought Contest. The election for school director yes terday resulted In a close contest, Dr. Kinney being defeated by nine votes Throughout the day the friends of both parties worked hard for their fo.V orltes. Dr. Kinney was handicapped by the circulation of & story that if elected he would vote to do away with the high school. The story was an election dodge, pure and simple, but a sufficient number of voters believed It to elect Mr. Conn. Some weeks ago, when the school question was being discussed, Dr. Kinney was asked about the advlsablll ty of closing the Unlontown school, In order to cut down expenses. His an swer was tfiat he would never favor taking away a school from the poor man's children, and also remarking that rather than adopt such a course would be better to do away with the high school. Out of this Incident the story circulated yesterday was manu factured, and those who used It to fur thelr their alms went so far as to say that the votes of Mr. Dealy and Mr, Dickinson would also be cast with Dr, Kinney's should the latter be elected, to abolish the high school.
