The steamship Columbia arrived down yesterday morning from Portland and crossed out, bound for San Fran cisco. The British bark Lorton, Capt. Arch er, has been added to the list of ship ping to load at this port. The Lorton will get her cargo at Antwerp. Charles Green, charged with drunken- ness and striking a police "officer, was tried before Judge Osburn yesterday and found guilty. He was fined $40. The F-cholars of No. 2, Cedar street school, had a holiday yesterday while their teacher, Miss Grant, visited the other school Miss Grant may have found larger children in the other rooms, but none, for their size, brighter or smarter than her own No. 2s. It was stated upon apparently good authority yesterday that the efforts of the canners for the formation of a com bination had resulted In failure, a.nd among those chiefly interested, 1. e., the employes of the canneries, there Is a feeling of satisfaction at the news. The Stuttz performance of "The Pearl of Savoy" was largely attended last nlsht and gave great, satisfaction. The piece will be re peated again tonight and tomorrow night, which will probably be the last chance to hear the violin playing of Mrs. Stuttz, A. A. Cleveland and V. From the Jv'askanlne to the Columbia all the necessary deeds have been secured, with the exception of three or four, and those are expected soon.
