Ever since he reached his present conspicuous posl- tlon he has appeared to be In a condi tlon of exaltation, and desperately de- termlned to distinguish himself, lie hat . views on all the problems of public busi ness. It seems to Mr.: Sovereign that we do not need metallic money, but a great deal more paper. He Is Teller, -minus the amiable philosophy of that Immortal senator, A bill to repeal local option In Vir ginia has got into the general assembly of that state, and the consequences are alarming. There Is danger of the dis ruption of Uto democratic party by tht prohibitionists. The Richmond Dispatch ' utters a loud warning, saying: The members of the general assem bly do not seem to know that ho pro hlbltionlBta are numerous in this state Let us stand by the compromise wf agreed to years ago, which lias operater1 no successfully to keep the Trojan horse out of the democratic party." r , The Boston Harold says "It Is hardly worth while, to worry about what fu lure wnns ore to d, prevmed we ob talu a fairly good tariff from the pros ent congress. Further arrangements at reuuuuun iiHiy uu mucin gruuuuny, ar occasion shall Indicate." The trouble it the democratic congrer has served no ' tlco on all concerned that there is to be . no rest about tariffs until the power of the democratic party to disturb tho law is at an end.- As for "gradually" bring Ing on the Sectional and class legisla tion, that was promised every day from the re-election' of Cleveland until tht Wilson bill materialised. An Impression Is gaining strength Vhat the story of the contemplated pedy retirement of Gladstone from the anxieties and labors of public life which was recently given publicity by the Pall Mall Gaxette and telegraphed to this country, la pretty near the truth Tho language used In contradicting the . rvporfc of the existence of a purpose of resignation is not as explicit as the friends of home rule could desire. Mr. - Gladstone has seen over fourteen years vt hard work, attended with many vlcls eltudes and xcttetnntsl since he was 70 years old. It Is only h.uman for hlin to be weary- ife has meant to crown hia tarwr with JuU- to Ireland In the f an of borne rule, and wih Infinite liUua he carried through the house of rommons a home rule bill which was -.n.f xl!y JmiH-rfoct,- He ad to con t.'Dd with tho r,H of the people of England, and his Irish, broteh rrletiu4 who made up his majorl-l ty wore ofu-n dJlticult. and gave J in ' n ary eg much trouble as his antagrn lite Knia thwwout the till, and the crown and the peotlj of England were not with him. It it rinor v, if ,i,,., t,..i.i K- .'J lllII ll.UL ,1 IUUII DI1ULIIU a, general election, Mr. Gladstone with his homo rule measure, would be defeat ed. Success tteems to depend .upon the support of votes to be obtained through sido Issues. The prejudices of "England ! have not been conquered. Mr. Glad- stone haa dono much to liberalize his country, but he hesitates to adopt the extreme measures of the labor unions, and to strike at the church and the land. If he should try to go on, he must undertake u most harassing and tcll ous struggle, with no certainty beyond the exhaubtlon of his strength. He has aged pvroeptlbly within the yer, It Is claimed by his friends, and his 8l?ht and hearing are bad. It Is not within reasonable expectation that he should have many years of severe application to public affairs before him. Perhaps he thinks sometimes, if not all the time, that his sixty years In Parliament are enough. If the liberal party Is to live after hlmlt should be able to walk alone before he goes. If .It Is a mere personal party, It must soon be dlBor ganlzed, without respect to any one human life. If Mr. Gladstone should re tire, the probability Is Lord Koscbcrry would be his successor. The Inhabitants of Boston do not pro pose to allow Chicago, New York and Brooklyn to do alt the consolidating. A bill has been Introduced Into the Massa chusetts house providing for the annex atlon of all towns within ten miles of the state house, and all on the shore from Marblehcad to Hull. The towns iro first to vote on the question as to whether they want to be absorbed by the Huh or not, and then the Hub will vote as to whether they will accept any additional towns. This makes the con solidation question still more interest Ing, and a good many people will watch what the combined wisdom of Boston will do about It. That potent regulator of digestion, Hos tetters Stomach Bitters, disciplines the rebellious organ thoroughly. Indigestion arises from weakness of the stomach, and the food In it, for want of the , power to digest, decomposes and acidl- i ties, giving rise to heartburn, flatulence and pain, besides a multitude of symp toms both changeful and perplexing. But peace soon reigns when the great i stomachic Is resorted to and used with ; persdstence. Dyspepsia gives rise to j morbid discomposure of mind, and even ' sleeplessness' and ' hypochondria in i chronic cases. To the complete dlsmls-1 sal of these the Bitters is fully adc-1 quate. Liver complaint, constipation, 1 debility, rheumatism and malaria are completely subdued by this genial medi cine. "A TALENTED EDITOR."
