The changes that have been effected, and those contemplated, are very extensive. A new floor has been put Sn, the walls sealed, a handsome oaken desk adorn the business office, while a room 10xi: feet, In the construction of which glas: was plentifully used, has been built foi use as an editorial "sanctum." A coun ter only separates the business office from the Job-printing department, which has been painted white, in order to make the light as good as possible. It Is the Intention of the managemeni to make this department one of the finest of the kind on the coast, and m expense will be spared in obtaining fa cilities for doing work of as excellent a description as can be had in the East. The upper portion of the building will be entirely re-constructed, and three or four handsome offices will take the place of the old composing anc other rooms on that iloor. The work will be of the same elegant descriptloi as that in the business office, whlcl may be Justly termed the handsonies; office in town. Contrary to an idea which has be come more or less prevalent, the As torlan's composing and press rooms will remain ns at present, at the Elmon cannery. There the quarters are mon commodious than could possibly be th case In any portion of the busines; center. Moreov er, the Astorian's stear and electric plants furnish power, light and gas, commodities which cut a mort or less Important figure in the expens account of conducting a newspaper. Th' composing room is furnished with aleam heaters, and the employes are emibled to enjoy a uniform temperature in all parts of the room. In fact, nothing hat been left undone to make the facllitie for work aa good as possible. Neai the press can be- seen a patent stearr gaugo, by means of which the pressure can be learned without a trip to the engine room below, while in all part; of the machine room the light is ex eellent. The Coffee House, 622 Third street; best place for chops nnd steaks: oys ters by the quart; received daily and always fresh. The fflnlng room at the Astor house has again been opened. Only the best o: white labor Is employed. Give the fa vorite a chance. Don't go to Portland to buy your tickets for the "Old Country" and the East when you can get them for the same price at the Union Pacific office in this city, and thereby save your lo cal fare to Portland.
