The Chehaiis Nugget has the follow
In? rather amusing story of the last
election In South Betid:
South Bend lma a new political putty
termed by Its enemies with great nn
tempt, the Rubberneck party, aii'J by
its friends and members with great
pride, ditto. Marlon D. Egbert ia the
chief of all the Kubbernccks In Couth
Bend. They tell a funny tale o1
there, which well illustrated that
man never lives to be too od to get
rattled. When the city election wf.s at
proachlng, and the whole town was 1
a furor of excitement growing out
the campaign, Marlon D. discovered
that he had a client, a rudu, untutored
and unnaturalized rrusslan, Who woul
undoubtedly vote right were It not for
the fact that he could not vote at all
There was a way out of the difficulty
however. Egbert find a few of his lieu
tenants chipped In enough to pay lite
fees and marched the Prunuian up to
the courthouse to be naturalized. Judge
Langhornc put the usual quesi.'.pi'a
the candidate, who was a uillt sluw
with his English. He averred, however,
In answer' to the Judicial conundrums
duly propounded, that he liked thU
country and its laws, and was satisfied
he would make a useful and peaceable
citizen. '
"Now, sir," said the Judge, "I want
to ask you If you belong to any polib
ical party or organization, the object o
which Is the overthrow of this govern
ment?"
The man said ho did.
"Well, sir!" said the Judge, rising up
In great surprise, "Will you tell im
what it Is?"
"Die die vat you call 'em, Egbert?:
die Rubbernecks," stammered the be
wtldered candidate.
He was duly admitted when the court
recovered Its composure, and admonish
ed the badly rattled chief of the Rub
bernecks against harboring treasonabl
designs of the government.
