W. Dunbar was In trouble and giving vehement ex pression thereto. It appears that Dun bar last evening re-published a scurril ous article from a new Portland publi cation 'called the Tomahawk, In which i reflection was cast upon ex-inspectors of CutUoms Linville and Kearney. The article in question was published bod ily, but as a letter, with the word "Tomnhawk" used us a nom de plume. Dunbar, who recently announced thai be had his war paint on, was on his way from Grosbauer s saloon, si.r ieueci wun success , in manw un- attlnury battles, when Tom Lin ville hove in sight; but think Ivg that he possibly needed Home more piint, hurried on a run toward his house. He was not fast enough, how ever, for Linville caught him as' lie reached the sidewalk on the north aide end knocked him against one of the buildings. It was then the bellowing legan which brought people from all ides. After getting pretty well beaten lie was carried Into Grosbauer's to have the blood washed from his face before being conveyed to his homo. SCARLET FEVER. The Disease apiiears In the Western Portion of the City. Scarlet fever, which ha3 b?en preva lent in Uppcrtown for over a year past, has at last appeared in the west. am end of the city, and the prospects are good for the closing of the schools if the authorities take no steps tc abate the disease. Dr. Fulton, it will be remembered, in a letter to the coun- il a short time ago, called attention o the matter and recommended that irompt action be taken to get the di- sense stamped out, but so far no phy sician has been employed, and the parents of many of the children af fected are negligent, and depend upon hance and what medical skill can be found among themselves for remedial measures. Dr. Estes now report.i that the disease has appeared in the vicin ity of the gas works and near the Par ker ifouse, and expects that many more ases will be reported at un early day. The little daughter of Charles Oisei. has not yet recovered, and her father omplalns that her sickness will neces sitate the loss, to all of his children of the balance of the term at school Before the child showed Indications of the disease, she came home one day and complained that a boy whose sis ter had the scarlet fever, sat besld her in school, and she supposed she would become sick. Her supposition proved correct. A day or two aftei ward she was very sick indeed, and hei father at once kept his other children t home. It is a well-known fact that he children inl'ppertown are permitted to Intermingle Irresjiective of the fact that In the homes of many of them caiiet fever has broken out, and unti some action is taken by the city coun- 11 to appoint a physician whose duty would l'o to report each case of tht disease that, comes under lus notice ind in that way put the principals oi the various schools In possession oi Information which is at present hl'jlilj important, the trouble will inevitnblj increase until Its proportions will bt such as to compel the withdrawal bj parents of nil the. children who arc now studying. A dispatch was received In this city yesterday in which the Inforinatlon(V) was conveyed that F. h. Parker had pmvrn to be the mysterious John Doe Indicted some weeks ago by the rjrau.l Jury in Portland, that he had been Uken to Portland in charge or a dep uty Hulled Slates inarwhul, and that W. L. RobU luul accompanied him for the purpose of going; on his bonds. Au it was generally known that the "mys terious John Doe" had turned out to be E. P. Tohmpson, It was Biispected that a hoax had been perpetrated on the Budget, which published the dis patch under the heading, "I L. Par ker Indicted for Smuggling." On the arrival of the steamer Telephone yes terday It was learned that L. E. Selig had been a passenger to Portland the evening previous, and that a "job had been put up on him." A number of gentlemen, among whom were Messrs. Parker and Kobb, v. ere conversing in the cabin of the Telephone, when Sells approached und endeavored to ascer tain the subject of the .conversation. Some one on board then told him the story that the cx-deputy collei tor nt Astoria had been indicted und that he was being taken to Portland in charge of a deputy marshal. Selig. his "Jour nallstic" instincts on the alert, asked where he could send a dispatch from, n order that his paper might get a scoop" on the "news." He was told at Kalama, but decided to wait until the following morning. This he did, and wired as above Ftated .to his em ployer here. AN ERROR CORRECTED. The British bark Iredale, which was reported by an afternoon paper as hav ing been six hours on a sand bank at Tongue Point, sailed early thU morn ing. She waa riding at anchor near the Tongue, and never touched a sand bank on her 24-hour trip from Portland RETURNED FROM ALASKA. On the Telephone today were Anton Sunstad and Ole B. Sam seized several, swallowed seven, sank slowly, tic'hlng, "So Seasick," Sweeti Sarah sauntered slowly, See ing Sam so seasick, she said: "Susan, sprinkle same smelilng salts." She sprinkled some salts, singing sweet songs. "Sam survives," spake Susan. She sobbed silently. Sam sajd: "Susan, stop sobbing." She stopped, shivered, sneezed sud denly so suddenly Sam shuddered. Somewhat startled. Susan said: "Sweet Sam, sing some sad Sunday school songs." Sam sang successfully. Utlca Herald BRAIN'S AND BUSINESS. One great secret of success is busi nessthe secret, in fact, of success on a large scale is to conceive of it. us a matter of principle, not merely as r. scries of transactions. There are ureal merchants ah there are great states men, and there are small merchants as there are small politicians, and the dif ference between t lie grout and sin.'.ll men is very much the same In both professions. The small politician works by the day, and sees only the out frnall opportunity before him; the small merchant dees the same thing he is Icoking for the next dollar. The datesmon, on the other hand, Is ma: ter of the situation; he understand;! the general principles which control events. His knowledge enables, him to deal with largo question's tiiij shape the futi'ie. The great nu rchanr, doet the tiame thing. His lusinesa Is nut i mere money-g?t-!n affair, not ; mere matter of barter, but a science and an art; he Ftudles th? penera! !av.'- nf trade, wa'cbc. the gene:-al con ditions of the country, Investigates present, needs, foresees future wants, Hid adapts his buslnosu to tho broad unditinin -if hla time and r rt.ee. lie pu's as much brains into his work ai ('cs the (.taii-Kniun, nnd he ends bv being, not a money getter, but a Una- ninded aid enpal b- man. An minont ly Biuccssfiil buslne.-s man, of the statesmanlli; quality, said the other day that the more he understood d life, l he more clearly he aw thu i was done on business piinci- ples. By which he meant, not only tht the universe stands for the dollar, but that the univer&e is governed by unvarying laws, that promptness, ex actness, th roti jhriebs, and honesty are wrought Into every fiber. On these business principles all life is conducted If not by men, at least by that power which la behind man. It ought to be the ninbllion of every young man to treat his business from the point of view of tiie (statesman, and not from that of the politician. "A TALENTED EDITOR."
