Found Guilty on Six Counts in

THE VERDICT QUICKLY REACHED
The Jury Came to a Decision After
Deliberating for a Little
Over an Hour.

Portland, Dee. 2. In the Dunbiir tu-
iil this o.fternoon the defendant went on
he witness stand and 'entered a gcnoial
denial of all charges. The defense also
introduced a number of witnesses to
mpeach the character of Nat r.luin.
The case will probably reach the Jury
lato this afternoon.
The trial resulted (might In Pun-
bnr's conviction on six counts, the we
nd, fourth, fifth and ninth of the first
Indictment, and the third and fourth of
the second Indictment. The jury wus
out ahout an hour and a quarter.
THEIR INTERESTS IN DANGER.
German Bondholders In the O. R. & N.
Co. Dissatisfied.
Berlin, Dec. 2 The German bond
holders of the Oregon Railway and
Navigation Co., of which the largest
number of shares are said to be held
in Germany, have called a meeting to
take place in the offices of' the Berlin
bourse next Wednesday, to take means
to protect themselves on account of
the non-payment of the December cou
pon. According to the report received
of the Union Pacific, which has man
aged this company, being in the hands
(if receivers, the latter now state they
ate not authorized to provide for the
payment of December coupons. This
meeting will be convened by the
Deuthsche Bank, and there is consid
erable feeling among the German bond
holders of the Oregon Railway and
Navigation Co., who claim their -Intel1"
eftB are seriously threatened by tlic
attitude of the receivers.
THAT BIG RAFT.

Marshfield, Dee. 2. The cigar-shaped
raft was gotten off the middle ground
In the lower bay yesterday, where she
grounded several days since, and was
towed to Empire City today. The stub
born mass of floating plies parted the
steamer's lines like so many pieces of
twine, and went adrift again. One end
of the raft came In contact with the
coal company's dock when it was
adrift and knocked out twenty-three
piles. It was fortunate that It did not
come against the wharf square, as It
would have swept the entire structure
off the face of the earth. It is reported
here that another tug is on her way to
this port to assist the Ranger In towing
the raft to San Francisco. The sailing
date is not yet known.
RAILROAD WASHOUT.
The Coos Bay and Roseburg Road in
Bail Shape.
Marshfield, Or., Dec. 2. The high wa
ters on the Coqullle .played havoc with
the Coos Bay and Roseburg railroad
for a distance of eighteen miles. At
last reports Tlriftwood was piled up
along the line of road a greater part
of the way from Cedar Point to Myrtie
Point, and In places only one rail could
be seen, going to show that Itw freshet
had washed out the bed. It Is generally
believed that there will be no trains
running to Myrtle Toint for a number
of months. The flood has dnmnged (he
road manv thousands of dollars, but
the exact amount will not be known
until the waters have receded.
OAVK THEM LIQUOR.
Sterling, Dee. 2. William Stauffer,
Addison John, and Marcus John, came
In and spent Thanksgiving. On the
way Stauffer treatsd the two boys to
whisky, and all got full. Stauffer was
afraid to take the boys home, so he
put them In a blacksmith shop to sober
up. Next morning he Informed the
parents, who went after them and
found Addison frozen to death and
Marcus unconscious and liable to die.
Stauffer was arrested for furnishing II
quor to minors, and placed under bonds
to appear at the next term of court.
STILL FIXING JURORS.
Chicago, Dec. 2. The Coughlin case
came forward with the usual sensation
today, when It was announced that the
prosecution Was preparing to ask for
the dismissal of another Juror.

Marshfield, Pec. 2. The man In the
life-saving service who kw vlnil over
the stretch of ocean beach Just north
of Coon Bay. picked up the trunk of a
body on the beach yesterday. Both the
upper and lover extremities hiij been
(aten off by marine scavengers, leaving
no mean's of Identification, but it is
Kenerally believed to be the remains of
Chas. Robertson, who was drowned
near this vicinity lust July at the time
of tfie wreck of the Ill-fated steamer
Emily.
THE TARIFF BILL.

members of the ways and means com
mittee were in session thtee hours this
afternoon reviewing the tariff bill for
the purpose of correcting typographical
errors and other minor incongruities.

A DISASTROUS WRECK.
Lehigh Valley Road Suffers
Serious Loss.
The
Wlllti'Sbarre, Ta., Dec. 2. A bad
wreck oecuired on the Lehigh Valley
road m White Haven this morning.
Thirty onra piled up against a house
which was built close to the track.
Secral buildings took Pre, but were
extinguished. It la thought at least
three men wore burned to death in the
wreck.
The wreck will cost $t;0.)00, and if
the Lehigh Company Is compelled to
my the loss of the property by fire in
the town caused by the wreck, the luss

Von Gratta sticks to the story that he
is an emissary from President Dole, of

ceed to Washington.

storm for several years began thif
morning and continued till long after
midnight. The total fall at U.-n o'clock
was nine inches. Street car travel is
ureatly Interrupted. The storm Is gen
eral In Southern Wisconsin, Iowa, Mis
souri, Eastern K-insas, and Illinois.

Vlroqun, Wis.. Dee. 2 The- estatu
left by the late Governor Rusk amounts

Baltimore, Dee. 2. A disastrous con
flagration, swept through the commer
cial center tonight, entailing a loss of
$700,000, and throwing out of employ
ment over 500 people. The fire orlc.l
n.ited in the mammoth Helser building
on Baca street, and before it could be
got under control, the following build
ings were destroyed: Deutsche Litho
graphing and Printing Co.; L. Johns,
overalls and dry goods; Chas. llelser's
shoe factory; D. Langford & Co., clonk
manufacturers; the cigar manufactory
of August Mencken & Bro all totally
d"troyed. The fire spread to the dis
section hall of the Maryland unlver
slty. Sixteen cadavers were In pickle
on the top floor of the building, among
them the remains of Uncle Perry An
derson, of Durklng fame. The flames
communicated to the warehouse and
storage departments of M, S. Levy &
Sons, straw hat manufacturers, Pact
and Lombard streets. While the lire
was at Its height, the congregation of
the Jewish synagogue were deep In
worship In their temple at Gorman and
I'aca streets. The roof of the edifice
aught, and lire began to rain In upon
those engaged In prayers. The build
ings atul contents are all covered by In
surance.

negro arrested yesterday on suspicion

WOMAN SUFFRAGE WINS.
Denver, Dec. 2. The state canvassing
board completed Its work this morning.
The count shows that woman suffrage
curried the day by 0,347 majority. This

Pittsburg, Dee. 2. The police author
ities have declared against football un

DULUT11 HAS A BLAZE.
Duluth, Dec. 2. A fire which caused
a loss of probably $100,000 broke out In
a warehouse ot the Union dock. The
flames semn envelojed i the adjoining
warehouse. Both are a total loss. They
were owned by William Dunn, or Chl
eogo, and leased to the Union dock and
Warehouse Co.
ATTEMPTED OUTRAGE.
Marysville, Ky., Dec. 2. A dastardly
attempt was made last night to wreck
a passenger train on the Maryvllle
division of the Louisville and Nashville
near Nepton. The engineer noticed on
I he track tele graph poles, cross ties,
and other obstructions, and stopped the
engine In time to prevent a wreck.
TACOMA MAKES A PURCHASE.
Tacoma, Dee. 2. The purchase "ott a)
light and water plant by tho city from
C, B. Wright, of Philadelphia, was com
pleted today by Wright, taking tne last
of the bonds Issued by the city to build
