A Resident , of Kettle Falls Claims the
Proud Distinction.
A lineal descendant of King Com
Comly has appeared at Kettle Falls,
and gives the following to the Pioneer
of that place:
On my mother's side I am directly
by legal succession of the blood of the
fole king known to history as such
of the Columbia and of all the Pacific
Slope, in those latitudes, .viz.: King
Com-Comly, the truly royal host of the
Astor expedition there in 1811 and 1S1",
and of all whites later in this realm
His relations with th whites had ever
been most amicable. A leading officer
of the Astor staff of the name Mac
Dougal (Duncan) had, before the trans
fer of the establishment to the North
west company in 1813, married an elder
daughter of King Com-Comly, a hand
some woman of proud, queenly mien

pictured to us.

WHERE DOES CHARITY BEGIN?
A Correspondent Takes Exception to
Sending Offerings to Portland.
The following communication will be
found self-explanatory:
Editor Astcrlan:
I notice in the Morning Astorlan
that some of our good people intend
meeting in the Presbyterian church
today for Thanksgiving services. This
much Is very good, but I also notice
that their Intention Is to take up t
subscription for the benefit of a Port
land hospital. You say In referring to
the hospital that It is "dispensing live
hundred dollars a month in assisting
the sick without respect to religion,
nativity, or residence of the needy,"
and refer to It in such a way as to
lead those not informed to suppose that
this is different from other hospitals in
Portland and Astoria. I desire to say
that the Good Samaritan and St. Vln
cent hospitals of Portland and St. Ma
ry's hospital, of Astoria, are engaged
in the same kind of work, and on the
same terms, without respect to re
ligion, nativity, or residence.
This thing of raising a subscription
in Astoria to help the poor in Portland
something I cannot endorse. A few
years ago I drew the attention or one
of the good ministers who was particu
larly zealous in the work, to the fact
that "true charity begins at home,"
even in Astoria, That Astoria nad
many poor and afflicted people who
needed all the charity we who lived
here, had to bestow; that Astoria had
a charity hospital as well as Portland,
and that it was caring for the sick.
AWARDED HIGHEST HONORS WORLD'S FAIR.

homeless, friendless, and money-lew,
year after year, without any fuss or

who have dedicated their whole lives
to charity work; that the physicians of
our city give their best skill to assist'
in this work, and that no one Is ever
turned from the hospital's doors who
asks in the name of charily. And all
are kindly cared lor ana nursed wick
to health without respect to religion,
nativity, residence, or future compensa
tion. I told the good minister this, ami
asked, him if Portland ever raised n
subscription to help provide for the
poor and sick of Astoria, or if Port
land churches or people" ever interested
themselves ubout our hospitals or other
publio institutions; ar.d I finally asked
him if he really believed that "True
charity begins at home," and stays
there until there is no further need for
it. And Uie good man said he did be
lieve that, and that as long as Astoria
had sick and poor people, and he was
a citizen here, he would practice his
charity at home.
I will ask which city should be best
able to care for Its poor, Portland or
Astoria? Which is the most wealthy
And what earthly reason can any one
have for sending donations to the Port
land poor and sick or a Portland hospi
tal, when it is all needed here at home

Alter suffering for over throe years
with acute neuralgia and its enns-:equr.nt
insomnia (which seemed to baffle the
efforts of Borne of our best physicians)

New Discovery has been tested, and the
millions who have received benefit from
its use testify to its wonderful curative
properties In all diseases of Throat,
Chest and Lungs. A remedy that has
stood the test so long and that has
given so universal satisfaction Is no
experiment. Each bottle is positively
guaranteed to give relief, or the money
will be refunded. It Is admitted to be
the most reliable for Coughs and Colds.

A WONDERFUL MACHINE.
There is no doubt that man la a fine
mechanism, but like every other ma
chine he wears out by friction. It is
said that he is lxjrn again every two
or three years. His body is virtually
remade from food. To retard this mak
ing over Is radically" wrong, as a man
loses so much vitality in the delayed
process that It takes a long time to
recuperate. The process of nial.lng
anew Is so accelerated by purging with
Brandredth s Pills that a new man, as
it were, may be made ir, two or iim-
months, and the change in the nieehan
ism Is such that the worn out part is
replaced by the new without the usual
running down of the entire machine.
You don't have to stop for repairs.
Purge away with Brandredth's Pills
the old, disease! and worn out body.
They are purely vegetable, absolutely
harmless, and safe to take at any time.
