The regular German Sunday after noon services will be held at the Con- gregatlonal church at 2:30 tomorrow. The British ship "Wendur, 1S96 tons, Captain Disklnson, has been added to the list of shipping en route to this port. Mrs. George Trenchard yesterday presented- her husband with a boy weighing twelve pounds. Mother and child are doing well. The steamship Geo. W. Elder. Capt Fohlman, arrived down from Portland yesterday, but on account of the rough weather outside did not cross out. The state board of equalization will meet at Salem on Tuesday, December Gth. The State Association of County Assessors will meet in Salem on Decern ber 23d. The British ship Poseidon, Captain Klaenforth, arrived down from Port land yesterday, loaded with wheat for the United Kingdom for orders. Her cargo consists of 94,400 bushels, valued ot $56,000. Bonn, who recently resigned from the Willapa Pi lot, on which he had been employed for the last three years, will engage In a Journalistic venture In Ilwaco on his own account. The British ship Parthenope, which was anchored oft Flavel -Thursday, dragged her anchors yesterday morn lng, losing one of them and 120 fath oms of chain. She was brought up to this city yesterday. From LIm's statement It appears that Lock invaded hla (Llm's) room and got pos session of his money, amounting to $25. Lim, who had been sleeping, was awakened by the intruder, who there upon drew a revolver and brutally beat his victim over the head. The pro gram Included remarks by Mrs. Bu- shong on the work of the society and its benefits, a vocal solo by Mrs. Bar clay,, who was warmly applauded; "a recitation by Terry McKean In his characteristic style; a cleverly executed Instrumental solo on the guitar by Professor Thiel, a recitation by Miss Bessie Rutter, who excelled herself and received a generous mead of applause, and a vocal duet, very well rendered, by Messrs. Belcher and Kozer. THE STORM. Unusually High Tide Yesterday Causes Considerable Damage. Shortly before noon yesterday water was noticed coming Into the basement of Foard & Stokes' grocery establish ment, and before the gocds which were stored there could be removed, damage amounting to nearly $300, according to an estimate by Mr. Foard, had been sustained. In about half an hours time the water rose to a height or some ten inches. The damaged stock consist ed of canned goods, nails, etc. In M. C. Crosby's basement the em ployes were surprised to find about nine inches of water at noon, but the damage Is only nominal. The rapidity of the rise of the water was a subject, of considerable discussion yesterday on the streets. As far as could be learned, no further damage was done In the city. Judge Langhorn'has Issued a war rant for the arrest of A. Davis, for merly connected with the Cathlamet Gazette, and when the papers are serv ed, Davis will be taken before a com mission of lunacy. It appears that uooui. two weeKS ago Davis wrote a letter to the following named gentle men: O. M. Harvey, J. Bruce Pol worth, George M. Cornwall (editor of the Gazette), Charles Warren, and A. D. Blrnie, in which he made a rather peculiar demand. The letter- was couched In terms about as follows, as near as an Astorian reporter was able to ascertain: "Sirs: Revenge Is sweet. You must atone for your crime. I demand $2000, the money to he placed In my drawer in my room before midnight on No vember 11th. If you do not comply with my request I will burn your build ings and place each of you under the sod." A. DAVIS. When the letter was read, the gen tlemen became alarmed, and armed themselves, and put a watch on War ren's cannery, In order to be prepared for emergencies should incendiarism be attempted. Davis then locked himself in his room and could not be per suaded to emerge therefrom. The sher iff attempted to dislodge him, but with out avail, and it was not until the expiration of forty-eight hours, during which he had neither food nor drink, that the evidently Insane man re appeared. When he did come out, he at once took the boat for Portland and was seen there a few days ago. by resident of West port. The residents of Cathlamet are much exercised over the threatening letter, and vow that sane on insane, Davis will never again reside there. Wade Hampton Smith's Case Taken Under Advisement. The case of Wade Hampton Smith charged with assault with a deadly weapon, came up before Justice Cleve land yesterday, and was taken under advisement after hearing the test! mony, which, together with an ex hange of pleasantries between the le gal brethren, was Interesting. , Fulton Bros, defended Mr. Smith, and A. R Kannga for. the prosecution. The evidence showed that the facts of the ase were substantially as published In these eolumns on Wednesday. It also appeared that after the bricks had been sold under the terms of the chattel mortgage, Mr. Smith had caused fence to be erected on his property across the only means of access to the brick yard, and it was this obstruction that Chrlstensen was In the act of re moving when accosted by Mr. Smith The evidence further showed that Sher iff Smith wrote two letters to, Mr. Smith warning him not to interfere with the men, as they owned the bricks and had a right to remove them. Mr. Kanaga stated that his client would take the property If he had to do bo by force of arms, to which Mr. Fulton iesponded that his client would hold on to the property and use a gun if ne cessary.
