THE SALMON BUSINESS.
The Pack
Estimated to be
That of 1889.
Equal to
The Cutting: Packing Company
llUH
Issued the following: circular:
Returns from all sections, near and
remote, where salmon Is packed, have
now been received, and although It is
difficult to obtain exact figures, as to
the output of each separate cannery.
It Is tolerably certain thut the total
amount produced will not vary much
from the quantity canned in 1889, say
1,500,000 cases, each containing four doz.
tn one-pound cans, thus making It one
of the largest years of production in
the history of the business, but not
withstanding this enormous product, ao
much has consumption in the article
increased, owing to Its excellence as
a food supply, furnished at a lower
price than any other Article having a
corresponding amount of nutriment,
that the market is in a. healthy shape.
The carrying over from previous sea
sons was small, the financial condition
of most of those engaged In the busl
ik sb Is good, and while there Is no im
mediate prospect of any advance In
prices, the outlook is good for mainte
nance of present figures. ' The spring
pack of tiie Columbia Is all sold and the
fall pack from this river is not such as
to commend itself to first-class trade.
Of the pack of about 600,000 cases in
Alaska, fully one-third is of varieties
other than first-closa red fish which
forms the standard for output from
this section. The great Increase In the
pack this year is In the packing of
rti-IUsh Columbia, including Fraser riv
er, whore the total amounts to over
' 600,000 cases, against about 400,000 cases,
tho largest pack in any one previous
year; but there is small chance of the
. present year's figures being repeated In
1894, as fish have not In the past been
numerous in immediately succeeding
.' years. With ordinary prosperity In the
world generally, we look for the con
sumption of the present season's puck
before receipts of next year's can li.
