The total tonnage on the way to this port at present is 27,547, as compared . with 9,693 tons for Puget Sound points. The bark Merioneth has completed discharging her rock ba'last, and will leave for Portland as soon as a tug arrives. The British ship Hawksdale, from Antwerp for Astoria, was spoken Sep. tember 30th in latitude 9 south, longi tude 30 west. There will be a meeting of the Asto ria Football Club tomorrow (Monday) evening, at 7:30 o'clock, at the store of Mr. James Flniayson. The Jewell school directors have de cided that the use of the rod is effica cious, "and that it may be vsed when necessary In that district. The British Bhlp Santa Clara, 1474 tons, Captain Fuller, from New York for this port is out 138 days, and may be expected to arrive daily. There will be divine service in Betha- nia church, on Fifth street, Upper As toria, at 10:45 this morning and at 7:30 p. m. Rev. P. Steen will officiate. A rumor waa current yesterday that Deputy Sheriff Dell Mooer was to be married this evening, but investigation proved it to be without foundation. The British bark Earl Derby is among the latest additions to the list of ship ping en route to Astoria from foreign ports. The Derby comes from Callao. Tne .tug Kobart came in at 2 p. m. yesterday with a load of salmon and cannery supplies and Chinamen from the SiuBlaw. She Is discharging at the Union Pacific dock. David Tweddle has begun suit against M. M. Ketchum to recover the sum of $1070.10, alleged to be due him as wages for work done, and for costs and dis bursements of the action. A horse belonging to the Clatsop mar ket ran oft yesterday morning on Third street near the roadway, but fell after running a short distance and the e- cupant of the wagon, W .E. Seney, was unhurt. The steamer Columbine returned from her northern tour of inspection yester day afternoon. She visited Cape Flat tery, Point Wilson, and Destruction Is land, and Captain Richardson reports all -well. The Miltonburn, a five-masted bark, will take 100,000 cases of refined petro leum from Philadelphia for Calcutta, The Miltonburn belongs to R. W. Shankland & Co., of Greenock, who own the well-known Burn line of ships. The Laboring World, which wa3 ush ered into existence a couple of weeks since, has died, and there are not lack ing those mourn the untimely depart ure of the editor and proprietor, Mr. Steele. . These are the lowest priced ships now under charter at that port, but it is evident that other wooden Ships of large size will have to accept similar terms for other business, or remain Idle. There are now five wooden and Ave Iron ships awaiting charters in San Francisco. Sportsman intending to purchase their winter's supply of ammunition should communicate with Foard & Stokes before purchasing elsewhere. Nlssen, cecretary of the Luth eran University Herald, furnishes the following: The Northern Pacific spe cial conference for the Norwegian Luth eran Evangelical church, of America, will meet at Pastor C. Hoel's, Everett, Wash., Nov. 24th, at 9 a, m. Matters for discussion are proposed as follows: 1. Justification. 2. How shall the Ho ly Scriptures for us be the only source and rule for faith, doctrine and life? There will at the same time be the dedication of the new church at Ever ett, therefore the priests are requested to have their clerical robes with them. The conference will probably end Tues day, the 28th. A surprise party was given Friday evening at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Wirt, in honor of their eldest daughter. Miss Lorena Wirt. He will return to morrow. C. F. Harder, of Lewis and Clarke, who has been in this city getting med ical treatment for a couple of weeks, past, is convalescent. Col. See what Foard & Stokes have in this line before buying elsewhere. A SHOCKING ACCIDENT. Winter Kyle Haa a Narrow Escape From Death. A rterrlble accident occurred at Up pertown last evening, and as a result Winter Kyle, a boy of about 13 years, lies dangerously ill at the residence of his parents. The details, as learned from Dr. Estes, who was called upon to attend the little sufferer, are shocking. The victim had spent the greater portion of the even ing sleighing on the walk lead ing toward the residence of Officer Sea feldt, and collided with a fence while traveling with great force down the grade. When the sleigh- collided the rear end of it Btruck the lad in the lower portion of the abdomen, cutting him from one groin to the other, and exposing but not injuring, several vital organs. The wound was sewed up, af ter chloroform had been administered, and at a late hour the boy was resting as easily as could be expected under the circumstances. THANKSGIVING. Following will be found a sketch of the life of the late Thomas Mooers, who was very weir known In this city: Eorn February 4, 1819, In Mlramlchl, N. B., and moved to Mllo, Me., Jn 1847, where he remained about sixteen years In the lumbering business. Subsequent ly he engaged In the same business in Stillwater, Minn., until If 87, .when" he came to this city, and lived quietly upon the proceeds of many years of toll. In 1841 he married Miss Mary E. Bamford, who bore him five children, one boy and four girls. His wife died iu 1853. He was married a second time in 1855, to a daughter of George Mitch ell, and by her had six children, five beys and on eglrl.
