A CATTLE MONUMENT.
The monument which has been erect
ed upon the battle-Held of Solferino Is
one of the largest, If not the largest of
Us kind In all Europe. It consists of a
tower seventy-four meters high, sur
rounded by an electric lamp, and rises
In seven stories, each representing
campaign in the struggle for the lnde
pendence of Italy. Each separate story
contains all Uie names of the generals
and other officers as well as the men
who fought In that campaign. No few
er than 700,000 names are thus Inscribed
on the Inner walls of the monument
On the ground floor are the busts and
portraits of all Mie leading generals,
and the chief ornament in the center
of the ground floor Is the colossal mon
ument In bronze of Vlcton Emmanuel
by the Venetian sculpton Dal Zotto,
The tower stands In grounds beautiful
ly laid out, and constitutes a magnifi
cent memorial of Italian unity. Be
neath the structure repose 200 skulls
and other remains of soldiers of the
three nations who fell on the field of
Solferino.
HORSE LANGUAGE.
My horso has a low whinny which
menno "water," and a bighor-kcyrd,
moro emphatic neigh which means food.
When I hoar those sounds I know as
definitely what she means as If she
spoke In English. This morning, pass
ing along the street, I heard that some
low whlnnv. and. looking up, saw a
strange horso regarding, me with a
pleading look. I knew he was suffering
from thirst, and no language could
make lt plainer. ThW language of the
lower animals Is not altogether artic
ulate. It Is largely a sign language.
The horse does a good deal of talking
by motioiiH of the head and by his won
derfully expressive looks. He also,
upon occasion, talks with the other ex
tremity. A peculiar switch of the tall,
and a gesture as If threatening to
kick, are equine forms of speech. The
darky was not far wrong who' said of
the kicking mule, "It's just his way of
talking."--C. 11. Palmer In Science.
