THE SILVER QUESTION.
. ihe Editor:
redden'.. Cleveland, in a recent let
ter to the governor of Georgia, says:
"I will not knowingly be Implicated
In a condition that will Justly make
; me, In the least degree, answerable to
' any laborer or farmer In the United
.. States, for another shrinkage In the
'. purchasing power of the dollar he has
received for a full dollar's worth of
the product of his toll."
From this sentence It would seem that
President Cleveland wishes the
purchasing power of the dollar to be
maintained at Its present high stand
ard. This is Just the opposite to the con
dition of affairs desired by nearly every
one excepting the president. There
should be a shrinkage In the purchas
ing power of the dollar, In order that
the prices of all commodities should
bear tho proportionate relation to the
dollar of several years ago. Nothing
else would be Justice to the manufac
turer nor farmer who has borrowed the
means with which to prosecute his bus
iness a few years past, when prices of
all commodities were from fifty per
cent to double the prices of the present.
W may disagree about how to pre
vent the further advance of the value j
of the (standard dollar, but It seems
very clear that an attack on either one
of 'the metals that has been our cur
rency will not prevent that advance.
History tells us that In, the sixteenth
century whit sold as low as (4d)
plht cents per bushel In England, and
the low prices and fluctuating values
were due to an Insufficiency of the
money of that time gold and silver.
' Hut. history also tenches us that with
the Tinding nnd mining of great dcpoHilx
of gold and silver In Mexico and Peru
in that and succeeding centuries, and
(he consequent addition to the volume
of the circulating medium, that the
value of wheat became higher and the
fluctuations less.
