Don't go to Portland to buy your tickets for the "Old Country" and the East when you can get them for the same price at the Union Pacific office in this city, and thereby save your lo cal fare to Portland. A good deal of feeling was cnused on the water front yesterday when It became known that river pilot Al. Hetts In the employ of the Union Pacific, had refused to move the ship Forest Hall with the opposition boat Maria claiming for his reason that the Maria was not strong enough to tow the ves sel," and that It was not safe to make the attempt with the wind blowing so hard. Captain Jones feels very sore about the action of Mr. Betts, and openly charges that he is simply trying to throw obstacles in the way of the opposition company, that the whole re fusal Is a bit of spite work, and that in earlier times Betts had considered the old Clara Parker strong enouRh tow ships, though she had not half the strength of the Maria. On behalf of Mr. Betts, and in Justice to that gen tleman, it must be said that several marine men who know what they are talking about, believe that It would have been dangerous to move the For est Hall yesterday under the condl- tlons, and that the pilot had acted In a perfectly proper manner by desiring to wait. Mr. Betts stated yesterday that he had no objection to the Vul can, the other opposition boat, and it is probable that she will be down and take the vessel up today. Yesterday afternoon when the rcpul lican convention, met at Rescue engine house, to nominate a ticket for the J coming city election, every delegate was on hand, and the general feeling; that pervaded the guthering was one of absolute confidence, and good fellow ship. It seemed as if everybody was glad at the thought of having shaken off conditions both unsavory and un favorable, and declaring! against the disruption of the party and tho throw ing away of the city government to a mixed breed of political hacks. Sharp on time the meeting was called to order and Mr. G. Wlngate was unan imously elected chairman, with Mr. H. J. Wherrlty as secretary. After rou tine business had been transacted, the nominations were proceeded with. A very noticeable difference between the meetings of the two conventions was that the republicans decided to proceed with their election, bollottlng and all, with doors wide open. What differences there were, and there were very few, vv'ere settled in public, and all the pro' cecdlugs were "on view" to everybody that cared to see. The "citizens' " with their star chamber nominations in cau cms, presented a difference that gives a good deal of food for reflection. The balloting was spirited, and the favorites' of the various delegates were largely supported. The following ticket was nominated: For Mayor MAGNUS C. CROSBY. Auditor and Police Judge JOHN C. BRYCE. Treasurer A. S. REED. City Attorney J. A. EAKIN. , City Surveyor W. T. BEVERIDGE. Street Superintendent CHAS. GODDARD. Police Commissioner J. O. HANTHORN. Harbor Master CAPT. PHIL JOHNSON. Councllmen: First Ward JOHN T. HAY. Second Ward JAS. W. WELCH. Third Ward' G. A. NELSON. After the nominations were made and declared unanimous, the following city central committee was appointed: G. Wlngate (chairman), C. E. Foster, Rlppa, F. M. Green, Adolph Johnson August Holmes, O. F. Morton, Chas, j'oddard, and H. J. Wherrlty (secre tary.) A vote of thanks was then tendered to Messrs Herman Prael and F. J. Car ney, the retiring' precinct committee and the Rescue Engine Co., for the use of its hall for the convention. Three hearty cheers were called for and given with a will, for the ticket, and after pledges of unfailing support and general congratulatory handshaking on the prospsctB opened up by the nominations, the delegates and au dience went home to organize for a splendid victory next month. For some hours after the convention had adjourned the crowd stood around the street corners discussing the action taken, and the flutter In the new legal dovecote and other places, showed very plainly that the pigeons and rooks were very much disturbed.
