THE DAILY ASTORlAK, ASTOlilA, SUNDAY MORNING; NOVEMBER 5, 1893. LOCAL. AND GENERAL. The plan of a regular monthly dona tion to the Astoria. Public Library, which the lady managers Inaugurated Inst summer, haa been the salvation of that Institution during the stress of hard times. The average running e. pensea of the library urt about $60 monthly. In what other way .could that amount of money be spent to be of greater service to the citizens of Astoria - employer and employes? If you rave any doubts as to the beneficence of the library, spend a few leisure mo. merits each day In. visiting It and satis fy yourself. Examine the books, notice the class of people who frequent It, the rules that govern, etc., and If you ar satisfied' (which we think you will be) that Urn library association Is do ing good work and merits your sup port, leave your name with the libra rian aa a regular donator of from &0 cents to $1.00 per month. A number of people were out of town when the dona. tlon list was made out last summer, and others the ladles failed to see. Thia notice is particularly for them. Ask the librarian" to allow you to look over the list of gentlemen who have generously donated . 50 cents or $1.00 ier. month to keep the library going, pnd we think you will agree that they ore business men who would not give money unless thoy believed it to be foi the good of the city and citizens. Miss Bessie Uulter Is engaged to do tho collecting, which she will endeavor to do the lsi of each month. The lady malingers wish to thank all those who have o generously responded to their rails for tliiiincliil aid, and request those who have not and coii do ho to call. at Hit! library and leave their autographs, lowing places are designated as the polling places: First Ward Polling place, No. One's engine House. The Irrepressible lunatic who vends the Poineroy Independent once a week for molasses, potatoes, and whatever other glfls the gods choose to fling to It, says: "Tho merchants of our cities l. ained run command the situation and get th bulk of the trade at the cities named, if they will pursue the lines of a llbi'inl policy already laid down There Is no renaon why they cannot .pell all lines of goods as cheaply and pay' even more for our products than Portland, which Is fenced In by a dan gerous bar at the mouth of the Colum lila, and cxpnnslve and dangerous pilot. age inland up tho Columbia until such time as that mighty stream Is opened to free navigation from Kettle 1 to the sea. These are our convictions, miHlalned by the facts of the treasured pat and the wisest ken of the bright est prophetic visions of the future." A little further on ho remarks: "The prophetic writers of old always raised IheJr voice In lamentation on an empty stomach, but on a full meal their prophecies were always of the mercies of the god on their co;it of arms. The same spirit actuates the people in these democratic times." The emptiness of the HUmmcli of the Independent lliir when he told that falsehood nbout "the Columbia, River bar must have been appalling.
