1 1 TIIE DAILY ASTOMAN, ASTORIA, SATURDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 30, 1893. YESTERDAY MORNING'S FIRE. A Few Details of the Big Blaze and Its Results, nn Hpr.ount of the hour and the late negg an.l bustle at the fire yesterday morning, It was Impossible for the As- imian to eive a full account of tne ais aster In Its last Issue, and but the dpt.-iiis were obtainable. 1 blaze, m nearly a can be ascertained, , rdriniiind alongside the band saw the boi factory, and everything points to the conclusion tV.ai the whole con finsration was the work of an lncen diary. Vigorous efforts are being mide l.y the dlivct orate of the Clatsop j.1111 to ascertain everything possible in this direction. The fire, which by a pecu liar colncldi;nco, Is the first one of any dimensions since the burning - f the .pcra houne exactly a year ago l.c lay, Mimnlclely destroyed the box factory and the dry house connected w.h the mill. Tho mill building Itself, thnnks to the splendid efforts of the flreucn, was only badly scorched, and nothing of any consequence Inside the place was damaged. One hundred thousand feet of fine spruce lumber, the dry house, one of the finest on the coast, the box factory, with Its new machinery, and a large number of boxes ready for ship ment, are completely wiped out, and only a few charred cinders remain of wnat about 24 hours ago represented a value f.f $31,000. Eighty-four men are thrown out of employment, and a pay roll of $950 a week Is lost to the city. Dozens of large orders from growers of California fruits for boxes remain un filled. ' The loss Is only covered In a very r.mall proportion by the Insurance, amounting In all to $9,000, and this Is distributed na follows: ON BOX FACTORY: 1 loyal of London (Elmore, San born & Co.,) .. 4,000 Connecticut (I. W. Case) 1,000 Phoenix (I. W. Case) 1,000 Springfield (I. W. Case) 1,000 ON DRY HOUSE: Hartforl (Van Dusen)... $ 2,000 It Is stated that the dry house alone cost $8,000 to erect. In addition to the other lossci, nearly all the canners on the lower river and a good many Cal ifornia fruit men are cleaned out of box brands and brass stencils, all of which were In the box factory. These were worth, at ft low valuation, $4,000, and It will cost even more than this uitiotint to replace them. It is due to the members of the fire brigade to make more than a passing mention of their conduct. They showed yesterday morning that they knew how to"handla a big blaze, and that they could exert as much pluck and use as much discretion us any body of firemen on this coast. They worked hard and conscientiouily from tho very begin ning of tho fight with the flumes, and had the satisfaction of rctlng tholr efforts successful. They saved the old I X L cannery and the Clatsop mill from what looked like almost certain destruction. And all day yesterday they tramped In tho mud and rain among the smoking ruins watching for a further possible outbreak. The de partment Is to bo heartily congratu lated. ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTICI3.
