The ship St. Mlrren, 1855 tons regis
ter, sailed into harbor yesterday morn
ing, 29 days from San Diego, with sand
ballast. Marine men crowded along the
dock to watch her as she swung grace
fully around to her anchorage. She
has a rig that has. never been seen
here before, the peculiarity being that
she carries no royals but has Instead,
double topgallant yards. Instaed of
having to clew up a royal and furl it,
her men can lower the upper topgal
lant sail and reef it or furl it a good
deal easier. The large topmast heads
give more stiffness to the masts.
Yesterday's Oregonian says: "The
party sent out by United States Engin
eer Handbury to make soundings and
survey the channel at Walker's Island,
under charge of Mr. George W. Free
man, has returned. Mr. Freeman re
ports having foimd a good channel on
the Washington side of the river, where
there has been some scouring out since
the dike was completed.- The process
is still going on, and the prospect Is
that there will soon be a wide 24-foot
channel there. The sand Is filling In
behind the dike so fast that it is bare
at low water. There Is a channel on
the Oregon sido which, with a little
dredging, could be given a depth of 23
to 24 feet. The pilots, however, prefer
the Washington side ,ns It Is the more
direct course. The government snng
boat Corvallls, which went down to
Walker's Island to look for a snag
which had been reported by the pilots
to be a nuisance, has returned, after
successfully accomplishing the object
of her trip. She found several large
snags, and put them out of the way,
One of them had several large branches
lately broken off, and this Is supposed
to be the one against which the Colum
bia brushed a few days ago. The Cor
vallls will return to work on the Wil
lamette below Salem at once. The
Upper Willamette is at a fair boating
stage now."
THE NEW SCHOOL.
Dedicatory Exercises Yesterday Over
the Handsome Uppertown Building
The opening exercises at the new Up

ly welcomed by School Director J. W.
Conn, president of the day. Mr. John
H. Smith delivered the oration and
crowded a good deal of common sense
Into a very short space of time. He
dealt to some extent with the advan
tages of education, and congratulated
the children on their change to a new
and handsome school house which he
hoped might spur them to greater ex
ertions than ever In the field of edu
cational advancement. When he closed
with an earnest wish for the success of
the Uppertown school, he was loudly
applauded. Five minute addresses were
then delivered by Principals Wright
and Hawes, and by Mrs. Stewart and
Miss White, the two ladies speaking
on behalf of the Uppertown teachers.
School Director Thomas Dealy then
spoke briefly and dwelt on the signi
ficance of the occasion, and the lesson
It taught to all who were present. Pro
fessor Clark, the popular head of the
Uppertown school, made a neat speech,
and looked as pleased and as proud as
the occasion warranted. Since his ten

city, he has helped school matters on
with great strides, and may well be
congratulated on having had placed at
his disposal one of th.3 handsomest edu

These germs are
everywhere in the

The odds are in favor of the germs, if our
liver is inactive and our blood impure.
What is needed most is an increase in our
germ-fighting strength. To do this success
fully you need to put on kealthu flesh, rouse
the liver to vigorous action, so it will throw
oil these rorms, and purify the blood so that
there will bo no " weak spot," nor soil for
germ-growth.
We claim for Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical
Discovery, that it does all this in a way pecu
