TIIE DAILY ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, TUESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 26, 1893. THE LAST PROOF. TV! R. Shldeler's Death at Victoria Cannot Be Denied. It lfl wonderful how some Individuals pretend to yell themselves out of be lltvlnff anything. A few, probably three people In this city, believed, or pretended to believe, eftr the Asto- rlan's announcement on Sunday, that W. R. Shldeler wan not dead, and tha the Information published In this paper was incorrect. It was well known all ovr Astoria that the unfortunate Ehldeler had no toes on elthfr foot, In fact, that he was born without any development whatever In front of his Instep. T!r;if fore, to make a;- aur.mce doubly sure, the Atftorlan yei tcrday tolerri7 plied to the under- kcr who burled the body In Victoria, thn following fiucHtlon: "Had Blildclcr, the man you burled, any peculiar formation of the fnet?" And hero is the answer: "The body had no toes on either foot. No doubt about It being your man. The widow In Portland has Just communicated with the sereeant of police." It Is to be honed that the doubting Thomnses are satisfied. It doesn't mat ter much, however, whether they are or not. Whatever poor Shldoler'a faults were, one act on. the credit side of his account whore he has gone, will be the fact that his manhood was not Kuffiriontly daid to allow him 'to re mnln longer than a week In the posl tlon of "business mnnairer" of the Evening Bucket. LAURA BURKE DEAD. A f.irch Is Being Made In Salem for Her Parents. The Salem SUtesmnn say:: "There appears to ba much mystery attached to La'.ira Burke, whose death occurred In San Francisco last Tuesday. The 'Frisco police telegraphed to Astoria to learn of her relatives. The coroner wired the Salem police asking about her. Then ho telegraphed to tho States man a. message for the parents of the dead woman, and last night another message came asking the Statesman to wire the coroner the full nam eof the father of Laura Burke. No one has been found In Salem who knows any thing of the dead girl's people. Chief of Police Mlnto has a dim recollection of having seen her once In Astoria when he was down there on official duty some months agro. She was then In a dance house and there was a' fla vor of notoriety about her that Induced the Astoria police to ask the Salem officer about her, and they took him to Identify her. It seems that then llioro was an understanding that her parents were vell-to-do Salem people. But Chief Mlnto did not recognize her as anyone he had scan In Salem. It must be a mistake about her hailing from Salem If her true name Is Burke. The girl was about 18 years old when sho died. She la said to have married a (iHherman by the name of Meier, of Clifton, a small cannery about half w.ty between Astoria and Kalama. But r.ho did not live with her husband, It Is alleged. From all that cun be learn ed It seems that she was a variety actress of rather more than the ave'r ngo talent. She was suffering from bowel trouble but her death was caus ed by hmrt dlBease. Nothing Is stated cbout Mrs. Baker, at whose home in him Francisco Laura Burke (Mrs. Har ry Meier) died. It seems that she must have known omethlng of the deceased or the Snn Francisco papers have sev eral fads about her early life. But If that Information Is as faulty as that about the alxitlo of her parents It would room not to bo worth much. If Burke la the. dead girl's right name, she ha. no prominent parents here. As to where Bho does hull from and who her 'tropic really him there Is now no trust worthyjnformntlnn jvvailablo. CIRCUIT COURT PROCEEDINGS. I., RAILROAD VIEWS. To the Editor: ' I avail myself of your kind Invitation rto discuss the railroad situation, and will sny that I have a plan for the bulldlnif of a railroad from Astoria to transcoiitlneiital connections. It is ns ,followi: lt Astoria's citizens Incor. iHirate a railroad (.umiuny, tlieditw tt.ry to conslht of representative busi ness men of Astoria; buy and consoll ilate the Seaside and Bay Railways; rvrdve from the people here the bud Mules that have been raised for other projects, with any other franchises mat can be procured; and hypothecate the name temporarily for funds to complete tha bridge across the bay. rnI build the track to a connection at tilth's Point. Let them also extend . trvk from the present terminus ..... -.r W.;..-.r.y nr fcl(.t t-. Second street near the Union Pacific ticket office, thence east on Second rtrret to tha Union Pacific dock, the city council condemning the right of wty for the street and giving the same to the railroad company. This will make a line of railway from Sea side to Astoria nearly twenty-five miles in length, and when the road Is com pleted and the cars are running, there will be no difficulty In bonding the com pleted road and the subsidies and fran chises accumulated,' for money enough to complete the road to Goble or to Illllsboro. When bonds are sold pay off the indebtedness and proceed to complete, the "road. ' This seems feas ible, and can be accomplished eaully by sending two good men (large prop erty owners and largo owners of stock In the railway company) to London to negotiate for money, thereby saving big bonuses to third partloB. For it is reasonable to suppose that property holders in Astoria and owner of the l all road can get better terms on money to put in this road than third men or commission men. Let ub try It, by first calling a public meeting of the citizens of Astoria to discuss the mat ter. Yours, etc, W. C. CASSELL. ALONG THE WHARVES.
