The charter, moreover, will only run for six weeks, and under the present contract the' vessel will go back to Olsen after that time. It ap pears after all that the opposition pilot boat, instead of being a permanency, and as such entitled to respect and consideration, is only to be put on as a temporary affair to catch a few of the ships now due, and then to retire from the Bervlce. It Is not known whether the pilot commissioners of the state of Washington will consider this ground enough on which to furnish the applicants with certificates. John Cass and Hugh Boyle have re turned to town with' a bear story and what Is better, with a bear skin to substantiate it.- Last week they were hunting in a strip of the woods be tween John Day's river and the Wal- luski, when they came into an open space within ten feet of a big black bear. Cass fired with his rifle but missed, and the enraged animal turned on them. Boyle stopped him with two well aimed shots from his fowling piece, but Bruin, nothing daunted, came at them again, and got his Inst assail ant badly cornered. Both the hunters ran and then turning on him put four more shots into his body. The bear was plucky and staggered on until Carr, from a slight rise in the grqund, gave him two barrels in . the head. Then the animal gave up the ghost. When the boys were through with him he looked like a sieve. The Rescue Club met last night with President Estes in the chair and Miss Pearl Holder at the piano. There was a very large attendance at the game of football yesterday af ternoon at Smith's Point between the married and single men of the A. F. C. The heat on the field and two or three other disadvantages caused sev eral of the players to fall below their usual form, and though a good deal of conscientious work was done on both sides, the game was not by any means the neatest exhibition given this season. There were some good plays and sev eral bad ones. The married men were given the advantage of wind and sun in both halves of the game, and put up a neat defenca throughout, the for wards of the opposing team also play ing a commendable game, passing the ball, well and keeping things lively in front of the Blacks' goal sticks. Not a single goal was scored by either side, the match ending In a draw. No doubt before long a return game under more favorable conditions will be contested. A .May, 132 Main. . At 10:45 o'clock last night, says the Oregontan, the body of J. W. Weather- ford was found in a water-closet in a building at Third and Madison streets, where he had his offices. The discov ery was made by Dr. Kent, who has offices in the same building. As he pushed open the closet door to enter, Dr. Kent almost fell over the body of a man, doubled up as if in pain. Drag ging the body into the hall, he discov ered it was that of Dr. Weatherford and that life had been extinct for some time. After an examfnatlon his conclu sion was that death was due to heart failure. Coroner Hughes was at once notified, and the body, was removed to the morgue by Deputy Hill. An in quest will be held some time this af ternoon, r The deceased was a widower, 60 years of aire, and leaves a son and two daughters. He was a son of Dr. Wm.
