A sensation was caused here tonight by the state ment that City Treasurer Krug was de faulter to. the amount of $200,000. . This scrip was all covered by the Issue of bonds which it was thought would be sold in Juno. The financial stringen cy prevented the sale of tho bonds and over $200,000 of the city's money is , therefore In the hands of speculators who hold the city's scrip which cannot be realized upon until the bonds are sold. Late this evening the mayor form ally removed Krug from office and ap pointed KdwarU O. Graves, president of the Washington National Hank as act ing treasurer. Maine, Wash., Sept. 12. City Treas urer Krug, Seattle's defaulting treasur er, boarded tha Great Northern train at Hallnrd this morning and crossed the line Into lirltlsh Columbia. The Pacific Journal says: "On Satur day last a hotly contested pnd exciting game of football was played at Smith's Point, Astoria, between the first eleven of that city, and tho team recently or ganized at Fort Canby. Despite the fact that the latter have had scarcely any practice, they held their own for the first half. In tho second half they were not so fortunate, the Astoria boys scoring four goals in quick suc cession, when Just at the last moment, Rice of Canby, by a brilliant play, sent the leather home, making the score 4 to 1 In favor of Astoria. Tho only cas ualties of any consequence, were a kick in the stomach received by Rice, and a rather severe bruise on the leg by Clark of Canby. The visitors are unan imous in their praise of tho treatment accorded them by their opponents, and as there Is a return match on the tap- Is, they hope by assiduous practice in the meantime to make a more credit able showing." The City of Astoria does ordain as follows: Section 1. The owners or agents of any property fronting or abutting on any street Improved by the direction of the common council, or under a per mit authorizing such Improvement, shall, when nolllled by tho suiotin tendent of streets, at their owtt ex pense, ntako or cause to be made such local repairs to such street, roadway, sidewalk, or crosswalk, as will place the same In good condition.
