The schooner Maid of Oregon came in at 1:30 yesterday afternoon ' from Gray's Harbor and anchored in Scow Hay. The service which was to have been held at St. Thomas' church Sklpanon this evening will be postponed until Wednesday the 20th Inst. - There was a big day's business in the county clerk's olllce yesterday. Twenty five people filed on homesteads, and fourteen on pre-emption claims. On the 10th Inst Andrew Pietola of Salmon Creek, Pacific county Wash., and Henrlka Karollna Eskola of this city were married by Rev, J. J. Hoikka. A telegram has been received by Thomas Ityrle from A. P. Sharpstein to the effect that Mrs. Frank-Tuttie (nee Miss Annie Pope) Is suffering from an attack of pneumonia In Chicago. Smith, teacher of the' A 'class 7th grade, East school, was elected to the princlpalship of that school made vacant by Mr. Anderson's promotion. In his report to the asylum board Superintendent L. L. Rowland of the state Insane asylum gives the follow ing: Number of patients on July 31 605 males, 273 females; total 878. Nuni-j ber received during August 12 males and 14 females. The total number at the Institution during August was 905 618 males and 287 females. Five males and four females, were discharged as recovering during August. The aver age daily attendance was 874. The number of officers and employes is 102. An East Oregonian reporter was ad vanced on Sunday to the priesthood. He was standing near an open window cf the Webb Street Church, says the East Oregonian, sweltering in the heat and taking note of the sermon by the bishop, when that worthy gentleman started around to shake the hands of each number of the conference. Give him a trial and prove It. Last Friday morning Robert G. Coch ran committed suicide at Brownsville by shooting himself In the head with a S8-callbre revolver. The deceased, who has had bad health for some time, was mentally depressed, and it Is presumed ho contemplated sulcldo for a number of days past. A coroner's jury was summoned, who rendered a verdict of suicide. The deceased was well known and respected, and was a wealthy and Influential farmer. . It Is supposed that his suicide wis caused by mental de pression. He was a son of William Cochran, of Brownsville, and leaves a wife, and three children, one a son grown. He was 54 years of age. Doubtless there are many of the early day settlers of the- Rogue river valley who can remember, that in 1873 there lived on Galls creek a man named Ras per Meyer. In that same year Mr. Mey er started from his home on foot for Jacksonville, through the timber, and alone. He failed to reach Jacksonville, a search was Instituted, but he was never found, and th-s conclusion arrived at was that he had died of starvation. Last Tuesday workmen engaged in cut ting logs for Kllpple & Marcuson, on Galls creek, came upon a heap of moulded and rain bleached bones. Up on examination these proved to be the remains of Kasper Meyer. The Identity was established by a meerchaum pipe, tobacco box and a pair of spectacles which were found near by and which were known to be the property of Meyer. Medford Mall.
