The following crop and weather bul
letin for Western Oregon reached this
office yestjrday: A remarkably warm
wave passed over during the first part
of tho week. August 3lHt. was the
warmest day of the year: Tho temper
ature reading 96 degrees nt many plac
es. The latter part of tho week was de
cidedly cooler. The mean temperature
ranged from 58 degrees at places on
the linmedlat coast, to C6 degrees at
Inland places . Tho atmosphere was
smoky, due to numerous forest fires.
The smoke wis particularly dense in
tho Willamette and Rogue river val
leys. Failing ashes became objection
able to pedestrians on the streets of
Portland, where tho deposit was suffi
ciently thick to attract attention. There
-was about tho average amount of sun
shine, and no rain occurred. Harvest Is
nearlng completion, being principally
confined to late sown spring wheat and
oats. Early sown spring . wheat was
practically a failure. Tho grain crop
failed to mature and many oat crops
were cut for hay. The second crop of
clover was light. The hop crop is de-

Preparations are being made for pick
ing and securing large yields. From
the first propitious weather which pre
dominated resulted in securing to the
hop groewr an excellent stand. Now
tho vines are laden with burrs of good
average Blso and of excellent quality.
I'lcklng will commence. In some sec
tions on the 7th of September. The
warm, dry weather of the past week
caused tho lice to multiply, especially
on bottom lands where the vines are
green. The crop is so far advanced
towards maturity that there Is little
fear of any material injury being done
by insects; should the weather be suf
lleli ntly warm to aBslst them In In
creasing. Fruit is plentiful lit market,
Plums and pears uro of excellent qual
ity. Much fruit is being shipped to
Eastern markets. Apples are plentiful
but Inferior, being Injured by the coil
11 it moth. Teaches are plentiful in the
southern and Interior counties. The
crop In northern counties suffered
from curl-leaf, and in some sections
was an' entire failure. Some fine spec
imens of vegetables are being shipped
to market. Vegetables are plentiful for
home consumption. Potatoes will aver
ag well; the crop has suffered from
drought. More rain would have ma
tured an enormous crop. Corn contin
ues green, with good growth; the ears
are not maturing. More rain Is nec
essary to make, nn average crop In nil
sections, except In the southern coun
ties of Josephine and Jackson, where
the essential climatic condition Is warm
nights.
