Bo.uey of Grass Valley, the mother and BiBter of Mrs. Pr. Howard, are visiting here for a few days. The Misses Lulu and Dimple Grif fiths of Port Townsend, have returned home after about a month's visit to their grandmother, Mrs. M. J. Fox. Says the Ban Francisco Comnurclal Xews: The British ship Bowdon, which sailed from this port, wheat laden, on March 22d last, for Cork, struck on Oeno Island, in the South Pacific, r.ot far from Pltcalrn Island, on April 27th, and the crew not being able to get tier oft, abandoned her. Captain Logte, cf the British ship Queen Victoria, which sailed hence on April 6th, reported on arrival that he sighted Oeno Island on May 4th, and visited lhe Bowdon ashore on the lsland..The provisions and outfit -had been removed, ;he hatches were open, but the cargo of wheat was apparently intact. The ves sel showed no appearance of straining. The mate went Oown the lazarett? hut saw no appearance of water, but there was a bad smell from the cargo. The visitors did not sound the pumps. 71 would appear from the above that there Is a fortune waiting to' be picked up by some one. Tug boats from this harbor often go on long -trips after derelicts, and one of them, the Fsnr iihrh.. when sIih went on her loner. fruitless search for the burned four mated Ilonresfleld, made what is uc nowledged to bo the longest towboat trip, without putting in anywhsro to ooul, on record. The Ilonresfleld was, and perhaps is "now, drifting around at the mercy of the wl:vls and cur rents, and was hard to find, but here Is a line iron ship of 1623 tons register, laden witli 55,000 centals of choice wheat, not strained, and with no wa ter in her hold, fast in one position, and Just waiting for a steamer to come ami tow her ore aru reap a large .l rt,.ns. Tulnnrl la alwtut Q OftA " miles from San Francisco, in a direct line, and if a boat went down there and hauled her off it would not be an extraordinary long tow to Valparaiso, Coqulmbo, Callao, Arica, or some other port on the West Coast, The fate of Mrs. Tappan, the wife of Purser Tappan, of the ill-fated steam er Annie Faxon, who was killed In the lecent explosion, was a most deplor able one. Mrs Tappan was known in Portland amongasm a 11 circle of friends who most deeply regretted the tragic i-nd of that most estimable ludy. She was married to Mr. Tappan only a few months ago In the East, and ac companicd her husband to this city, remaining here BeverM weeks before goin to III par la. At the time of the explosion, Mrs, Tappan was in the purser's room looking out of the win dow. She was blown, along with the cabin, clear out into the river. When the body was recovered a few days since, the faco was much burned by the steam. So far as known, that was the only Injury sustained by the lady. However, the force of the explosion and earful shock probably killed her outright; if not, Bho soon perished in the water. Purser Tappan had a very cloBe call, but fortunately escaped with slight injuries. He left the ofllce and went down on the deck for a few mln utes JuBt as the steamer was ncarlng the landing. He started to return, and was in the act of going up the stair way when the explosion came. He happened to be in such a position as to escape the steam and fragments of the boiler, but, he was pretty badly shaken up and his clothes torn. LAND OFFICE NOTICE.
