PFEFFEH'S PATENT PAPER.
Peffer Is not precocious. It is true
' he came from the country like a hairy
Assyrian apparition with an Kgyptlan
eyebrow, as one of the shepherd kings
who sought the sources of the Nile.
He had, however suddenly he emerged
from the mirage of the land of Kaw,
Leon long In training, and he never
was an accident. Such men come to
us as evolutions. Pelter Is less a per
son though he assimilates cold water
a ud vegetable food with the alacrity of
a child than he Is an idea. He is an
uutgrowth of the leisurely communion
that advanced thinkers have, reading
the agricultural departments of illus
' trated weekly, newspapers and apply
ing printed precept to original thought,
In the atmosphere of a hot stove. The
stove is all the more fruitful if it
stands in a store where salted mack
erel and Canadian molasses confront
each other In barrels.
Peffer's powerful first thought is that
railroads should be paralleled because
they represent capital, and government
roads should be constructed by the
people for the people. With parallel
lines he would charge for transporta
tion such rates as to confine the peo
ple and the food products to compar
itively limited arcus. The roads have
introduced monopoly Into farming by
long-haul rates on grain and in the
transportation of machinery.
Peffer Is an agricultural phenomenon,
and he grieves to ede food so cheap.
With, we are told, many hungry peo
ple, Peffer mourns that corn and wheat
and meat are so preposterously cheap.
This Is a winged flight of statesman
ship. It is also an Incandescent bolt
from the blue of philosophical thought.
But Peffer does not mean to desert
the people when they are hungry. As
far be It from him as from David Ben
nett Hill to do a reckless thing like
that when public life Is a matter of
comietltlon In votes.
Peffer means to food the people with
the fruit of his master mind, fertilized
04 It has been, with pure air and wa
ter. The fruit that he brings forth
ripe is paper money. Why not print
enough of It to pay ail debts and taxes
and assessments, and rub all the sins
and sorrows, the cares and frets of
the world away In the twinkling of a
power press, and turn it over to Pelter
for a fool's paradise?
We venture to' recommend to the
people of Italy, Bpagolettt Frutl of
course excepted, the propriety of oc
casionally giving the world a few days'
rest. There Is something the matter
with tha average Ituliiui that ho has
become abnormnlly susceptible to at
mospheric Influences. He can aaslinl
lato mora irritation from a fragment
of misinformation than any other lvp
rt'M;ntatlve of an ancient raci i The
Italian fury about an alleged massacre
of Italians in France exceeded evon
that of New Orleans, and the explana
tions of the French government do
not seem suitable to his soul. It Is in
Naples that the lofty spirit of i ven
geance breaks forth. The Neapolitan
Is Infuriated. Next we shall hear from
the original home of many of our cher
ished cltlxens Sicily equally (With
Hungary and Poland the source of Im
migrants whose speedy comprehension
of the lights of man to claim a living
from the fertile earth Is the Joy of our
democracy and the consolation of re
publicanism. Wherever there Is strife
for the enlargement of the sphere of
man, these glorious typical persons are
distinguished for the Invlgoratlon of
their qualities of understanding and
appreciating themselves. But we mere
ly venture to commend, so far as pos
sible, the processes of peace and the
panacea of good will to men.
One of the most blatant anarchists,
so called, who talked rot to the Idlers
at the synM(rogue In New York Wed
nesday, was called Julius Bogodamsky,
a name which has an Irreverent sound.
Julius has parents who are aged and
destitute, who are relieved by the ef
forts of a New York newspaper. Jul
ius has no time, apparently, to work
for the relief of his parents, but has
plenty of time to denounce the news
papers, the' reporters, the police, and
everybody except the anarchists. Ills
defiance of the' police, however, Is only
theoretical. He was the first to leave
when they entered the hall.
When the proud Pfeffer aroso on
Tuesday, In the senate chamber, it
was with a massive pile of books with
nothing in them the orator could find
that touched the occasion of the coun
try and a slab of typewritten manu
script showing how little the states
man knew, and a glass of water em
blem of purity that Pfeffer quaffs
with unfailing delight as he dwells up
on the luxurious lives of the brokers of
New York. Pfeffer lifts his mournful
eyebrow at tha broker. He points, his
bony finger at the man who deals In
money, and he and David Bennett Hill
hug each other in their mutual alarm
and grief that civilization has bred
the banker.
Fake news sheets use the word sen
sation as a cipher for "beer.". With
this key a good deal of the talk of
these disreputable carrion becomes in
telligible. Without It, their "editorials"
are as tales told by Idiots, "full of
sound and fury, signifying nothing,"
or nothing but a noisy vanity, hungry
not for progress, but for notoriety, the
fame that fades every fifteen minutes
unless sustained by beer.
The Evening Telegram draws the In
ference that Col. Ingersoll is a silver
man simply because. he went to a re
cent meeting In Cooper Union, New
York, and listened to the remarks of
the speakers- The Telegram is evi
dently confused by the constant refer
ence to the genial Robert as the "silver-tongued
orator."
It Is a very delightful object lesson
to see how nobly and instructively a
fatty personage, which a little while
ago carried a torch In a Harrison re
publican procession' with Its shlrt
SleeveB rolled up, can deliver Itself of
straight democratic doctrine, unmixed
with any lingo of past memories.

THE OPEN SWITCH.
AX ESTABLISHED 8 A FEQ HARD.
Anybody who tiavels by carp knows wliat
'is meant by " an open switch." It is the
terror of railroad men, and the dread of the
trrfveler. i Is victims killed, horribly man
gled or mniini'i! for life are numbered by
the score each year.
Yet even the dreaded "open switch" is not
so widely fatal as is a certain disease, which,
without ceasing its activity for an instant, is
daily filling hundreds of graves.
What is that terrible ailment? you ask.
It is Heart Disease "Hut," you reply, con
fidently, "1 haven't any heart disease my
heart is all right." Are you sunE 7
Dr. Franklin Miles, of Elkhart, Ind., the
distinguished specialist in diseases of the
heart and nervous system, states that disor
ders of the heart are as common as those, of
the lungs, liver, stomach, bowels or kidneys,
though often unsuspected. The reason peo
ple are not aware ot this important lact is
because symptoms of heart disease are not
usually recognized as proceeding from this
organ, but are attributed to some other
source. If you have shortness of breath,
fluttering or palpitation, pain or tenderness
in left breast, shoulder or side, oppressed or
choking sensation, fainting or smothering
Knells, tnur heart is o fleeted.
"1 liad been troubled with heart disease
for years. My left pulse was very weak, could
at times scarcely feel it, excitement would
weaken my nerves and heart, and fear of
impending death stared mo in the face for
hours. Dr. Miles' Nervine and Mew Heart
Cure are the only medicines that have proved
of any benefit and cured me." L. M. DYER,
Cloverdale. Md.
" My wife has been taking Dr. Miles' New
Cure for the Heart, bhe thinks it wonderiui.
She tins not been troubled with pain or
smothering spells since using it. We have
also used Dr. Mile' nils, and we find them

Revolution
In Eating
has been brought about by the
introduction of CottoLene, the
new vegetable shortening. The
discovery of this product, and the
demonstration of its remarkable
qualities, has attracted the widest
interest. Hitherto the common
shortening has been lard, or
indifferent butter. Every one has
probably suffered occasional dis
comfort from lard-cooked food ;
while it is well known that thous
ands are obliged to abstain entire
ly from everything of that kind.
To such people, Cottolene is of
peculiar value, widening as it
does, the range of what may be
eaten and enjoyed. Cottolene
is a cooking marvel. It combines
with the food imparts to it a
tempting color, a delicate flavor,
and an appetizing crispness.
No trace of greasiness remains
to offend the taste, or disturb the
digestion.
Cottolene is worthy of the
careful notice of all those who
value good food, of itself or fax
its hygienic properties.
