Erls'iitcn beaches this year than ever
l.-efore, the past week being an tiiiusu
ally lively one here. Every cottage on
the beaches from Elk Creek to Arch
Cape, Is filled with summer visitors,
and numerous camping: parties from
Portland and other up-river points are
enjoying the sea breezes and the ex
cellent hunting and fishing that can be
found back a short distance from the
coast. The hotels are filled with guests
and rooms are booked until the latter
part of September.
Next season therm will be a number
of now cottages on this beach, several
conti.iets having already been let,
Lewis and Flanders, the two Portland
gentlemen who have alread spent sev
eral thousand dollars on their Seal
Rock place, will build new cottages
and a prlvato hotel, early next year.
The contract for lumber has been
iiWiiiiled to the Seaside sawmill, and
hauling will commence at once.
A couple of anglers went out one
day last week on the South Fork of
Elk Creek and In a few hours returned
with 27 dozen speckled trout,' many of
which weighed over one pound each
At the Elk Creek House are twenty
Portland young ladles nnd gentlemen,
They are charmed with Elk Creek and
will remain several weeks.
A Jolly party from Portland Is camp
Ing at James Mahcr's place near
lirighton Beach. They pass the time
pleasantly, fishing and bathing during
the day time, excursions far back Into
the big forest, or a scramble over the
rocks at low tide gathering mussels
and crabs. The nights are made merry
with songs, around huge bonfires on
t'e beach. The following compose the
pnrty: Mr. N. Bain and wife, Misses
E. V. Bain, Lemah Bain, Nellie Bain,
Lillian Bain, Lois Bain, and Amy Pew
ell.
