There Is no place In Astoria where John Kopp's famous beer is kept in such good condition as at Utzlnger's popular resort. About 11 o'clock last Wednesday night, Mr. E. C. Carson, who lives at Bear Creek, near Creswell, was awak ened by smoke, and found his house being destroyed by flames. The family were nearly suffocated and barely had time to save themselves by getting out of the burning building, without sav ing any of their personal effects. A small storehouse and barn also caught frotii the flames of the house and were destroyed. Besides the ordinary house hold effects, there were in the house and destroyed, two watches of consid erable value and several hundred dol lars worth of diamonds. The storehouse contained quite an amount of supplies and the barn contained wagon, carri age, harness, twenty tons of hay and other articles, all of which were des troyed. The total loss Is estimated at $3,600, and it was covered with insur ance for $1,600. Schwabacher Brothers & Co., yester day, says the.P.-I., began an action in the United States district court to re cover from the Union. Pacific Railway Company, the value of goods alleged to have been lost while In the hands of the railway company for transporta tion. It Is alleged that the plaintiff put 250 sacks of rolled oats, valued at about $800, on board one of the defend ant cars at Chapman, Nebraska, on November 10th, 1892, with the agree ment that the goods were to be car ried to Seattle by rail. It Is claimed by the plaintiff that this was not done, lut that the goods were transferred to one of defendant's steamers at Port land, Or., and never delivered at Seat tle at all. The plaintiff alleges that the goods or their value have been de manded and refused, and -brings this suit to recover one or the other. It is understood that the rolled oats -went down with Baker's' wharf last Novem ber and are now with the fishes. A. F. AND A. M.
