Sing, a Chinaman, who has been employed on the revenue cutter Oliver Wolcott, ten years, as Its captain's private steward, was arrested today on board that ves sel for smuggling opium Into the Unit ed States from British Columbia. When the chinaman's apartments were searched eighteen five-teal cans of pre pared opium were found concealed be neath his bunk. . The cutter was In Victoria yesterday, and, as was custom ary, the steward was permitted to go ashore and return at his pleasure Late In the evening bo returned aboard carrying a package, which accldently dropped. He then began to act in a suspicious manner. After the cutter left Victoria for the American side. Captain Roath ordered tho cook to search with the above result. This morning Washington Smith, .his two sons, and Charley and William Howell, and his son, Edward, met at a threshing bee near Newark. Soon a quarrel was started and Asa Smith opened fire with a revolver. The Howells returned the fire and soon wero all Involved. Asa Smith was shot through the head and Instantly killed.
