TODAY'S WEATHER. Portland, July 26 Fon Oregon and Washington; continued fw weather; slightly warmer. ' Local weather for the twenty-four h...,ra proline- at S d. m.. yesterday, furnished by the U. S. Department of .Vloulture, weather bureau. ' Maximum. temiera.ture, 5 degree- Minimum temperature, 55 degree precipitation, none. Total precipitation from July 1st. 1893, to date, .50 Inch. Ijefldency of precljHtatlon from July 1st, 1893, to dote, -55 inch. NOT FISH ALONE- It seems to have been easy enough, with traps and wheels, to drive the royal Chinook salmon nway from the Columbia, as evidenced by the yearly lesslng packs. Will it be as ensy to lure them by abolishing the destructive agencies? Once divert cd to other spawning grounds It Is not likely there is either instinct or tra dltlon in the finny tribe to bring them back again. Salmon runs and nuvl gatlon do not agree, to say nothing of the destructive agencies which greed of gain has placed In the course the fish" ln quiet, ante civilization ages, have pursued. So the probabilities are Hint the salmon Industry of the Columbia is sources of wealth must then be developed for the mulnten anco of the prosperltyof the country along tho banks of the L'reat r'ver; and the chances of fishing be sup planted by the certainties of lumbering mining and agriculture. Nor is the prosjiect discouraging. If there had never been one fish more than was needed for local consumption caught In the Columbia It would have been better for all the territory that skirts the river. It is true that the industry has brought here a hardy, jourageous set of men, and flecked tho water wUh thousands of boats; cases of canned flHh, well up In tho millions, have gone out; and hundreds of thousands of dol liiis have come in. Hut what of t'.at? Here is one of tho finest harbors of the world, and the exports, ithc-r than flHh, which have passed ths river bar Hlnk the canning interest lulo lnslg nlilcence- If the brawn ma muscle of the hardy fishermen luul been ex pi'iided on clearing the forest cl'Ul liUls, turning the trees Into lumber, ami compelling the soil to fruit and grain, tho individual man and the enuMry at large would hayo been vastly bet lor off. Coal and iron, building Hone a"d brick clay, wealth above jtround and below, nil are watting hero for development and utilization; n"d a twelve month devotion of energy would be vastly bettor f.n" tha i-opu lallon, than a few fitful weeks of fish liig and longer periods of enforced idleness. No community cu" b-p to make great advances lopendnnt nlonpj upon fishing or hunting; uml we can not close our eyes to tho fact that As torla's prospering has depended too much on the canning Industry- As on Incident In tho growth nnd wealth of the dly at tho gateway of tho Col timbla, fishing would be nil rlRht, but as their chief foundation It is nil wrong. If tho city had miiroml outlets, nnd If the resources of Clutop county hud ndequnto development, the salmon might wlm to luides or the Frazor for nil we need to enre. And as the fish re going, the railroad must come. It Is pimply a commercial nnomoly that t1ilpa should tie town) up the Columbia and up the Willamette, to find fnclH ties In Portland which could better be afforded in Astoria. Olve this locality only a tithe of the enterprise that ha bot-n expended on the cities along Tugt't Sound, not one tenth o well favor!, and no citizen or property holder would have caue to lament the falling off in the salmon pack- Ther a on argument for tho free jvilnnge of 'lver constantly lacking that of solicltuda by the "liver ndvo rates to be paid l silver dollars. rri, AKt.iria TJbrfxy Will b opened Tuesday and Saturday at 1 p. m- f or the usa of country uww- " NATURE DEMANDS A TONIC. We ought never to forget, even those of u who possess vigorous health, that we are wearing out that the vital clock work, bo to speak, must event ually run down. This, of course, we cannot prevent, because It is in the ordinary course of nature, but we may retard the too speedy arrival of decay by the use of an lnvlgorant which takes rank of every other namely, Hostet ter'B Stomach Bitters. This century has not witnessed a parallel in success to this famous medicine, which not only sustains health by promoting vigor, but overcomes constipation, dyspepsia, chills and fever, nervousness, rheuma tlsm, and other disordered conditions of the system fostered by weakness and an Impoverished condition of the blood. The feeble, persons convalescing after exhausting disease, and the aged, derive lnilnlte benefit from the use of this helpful and efficient tonic- FUNERALS. E. W. From the Boston Post While the walks in the Puhlio Garden were crowded yesterday afternoon about 4.30 o'clock, people near the entrance gates at the corner of IJieacon and Charles streets were horrified to see a man suddenly plunge a knifo repeatedly into his throat and fall to the ground. while waiting for a conveyance on officer questioned the would-be suicide, who was about 50 years of age, as to his name, address, and reason for wishing to end hia life, but the man steadfastly refused to give any infor mation regarding himself. Ho was taken to the Massachusetts General Hospital and surgical attendance given him. Although weak from loss of blood it is probable lie will recover. About 9 o'clock last night a hospital attendant got a little information from him. lie said his name was Samuel D , and that he came boiho weeks ago from New Brunswick. The last few days Ai head has felt queer, and he has been wan dering about tho city, not knowing which way to turn. What impelled him to commit hia rash act ho was nnable to say. The above is the familiar but terrible story of Clio results of mental derangement caused by overstrain of the nervous Bystcm. People who have dizziness, headache or back ache, or who are troubled with melancholy or despondent feelings, are already well on the road which leads to insanity nnd suicide.
