Antoria. THE MIDWINTER FAIR." San Francisco, July 24. According to reports here, the people cf Oregon are faking a very decided Intav! In the AHdwlnter Fair. Tod-iy a letter was received from William H. Munv and W. C. Qulmby, of iJort'hnl. ing that the.y had been rjsurca by (he chamber of commerce, board cf eniigra tlon, the Mayor of Portland, managers of Portland industrial ftssocla'Jm nnd bankers, that a strong urtort would be made to have Oregon well represented at the California fair. It is proposed by them to bring the Chicago exhibits direct from Chicago to San Francisco, and to add an exhibit from the Indus trial Exposition now In Portland. The State Horticultural society has a com mlttce at work already. They were to meet the governor of Oregon on the day the letter was written, and they say that, although he was opposed to a large appropriation for the Chicago fair, he would make no opposition to this one. At a meeting of the financial com mlttce of the Midwinter Fair this af ternoon, temporary chairman, Eaton, announced that subscriptions up to the present time aggregated $250,000, and that he thought he would be able to annunce, at the mass meeting Wednes day night, that $350,000 had been col lected. The general expression of the committee was that the fair Is certain It 1 now simply a question of magnl tude, which rests entirely upon the vol ume of funds. General Barnes sold the conflltlon of things Is exceedingly favorable and that the question as to whether the fair shall take place has been decided 1n the affirmative. SAN FRANCISCO SEALER SEIZED.
