But for the timely mtcrvetilcu of
Ed Ferguson, there would have been a
fatal accident last night, in the slip
Just east of M. C Crosby's hardware
store. The four-year-old 8;n of Q. V.
Porter fell from the dock at the rear
of his store. Into the water, wh'ch at
that time, was at high tide and nearly
10 feet deep- Ed Ferguson who saw
the boy fall, Jumped into an old scow
at one side of the slip and started for
the drowning child. Finding that he
could not propel the scow fast enough
to reach the boy before It was too late,
he quickly threw off his coat and hat
and Jumped into the water, reaching
the boy Just as he was about to sink
for the last time. It took but a few
strokes for the strong man with his
light burden to reach the stairway
leading to the rear of the building oc
cupied by M. Porter, where the little
fellow was handed safely Into the arms
of his frightened parents.
Ex-InSpectors of Customs Linyllle
and Kearney, who were indicted by the
grand Jury for alleged complicity in
smuggling operations, returned yester
day. The latter was In Albany when
he first learned of his Indictment- To
a reporter of The Astorlan he said: "I
wa on my way up the valley and was
reading the Oregonlan In Albany when
I saw the announcement that I had
been indicted. Finding there was no
United States Marshal In town I in
troduced myself to the chief of police
telling him there was a warrant out
for "my arrest, and asking him to tele
graph to Portland at my expense the
fact that I was In Albany. He advised
mo to use the telephone, which I did,
and took the next train back, reaching
Portland the following morning. Hon.
C W. Fulton, who will defend the case,
will insist upon fln early trial." The
district attorney, It seems, is in no
hurry to have the cases tried, but both
the ex-Inspectors desire an early In
vestigation and a prompt removal of
the stigma which has temporarily been
cat upon them, and propose to insist
upon their rights.
