Captain Thompson of the Solitaire,
made a big kick yesterday, over what
he terms, an outrageous charge, on
several tons of potatoes he had shipped
up from San Francisco via., the Union
Pacific steamer. A rate of $15 per ton
was charged, which he paid, but not
without a good deal of pretty hard
thinking.

program, the Monterey anchored at
St. Helens and gave the citizens of that

all thoroughly enjoying the hospitality
of the enterprising citizens. She re

and will proceed to Portland this morn

Deputy U. S. Marshall Stewart yes
terday received his appointment as
deputy at this port for another four
years. Mr. Stewart is here at the in
stance of the Portland Board of Trade,
and is supposed to look after the inter
ests of sailors and shipping generally,
which, it can truthfully be said, he
does in a very careful manner. Friends
of Mr. Stewart in this city will be
pleased to learn of his appointment.

Ross, Hlgglns & Company will re
open their branch store at Georhart
Park this week, with a nice fresh stock
of suitable goods to meet the wants
of visitors and campers.
The sociable and entertainment giv
en by the young people's society at the
Presbyterian church last evening was
a success in every particular. The pro
gram, which was very entertaining,
waa as follows: vocal solo,
Miss Pearl Holden; recitation, Fay
Lieberman; reading, Mrs. Stewart; vo
cal solo, Mr. Duncan Taylor; recitation,
Miss Polly McKean; duet, Messrs. Gray
and Garner. After the program was
rendered refreshments were served by
the committee, which closed the enter
tainment. During the next thirty days I will
sell all grades of wall paper and deco
rations at a discount of 25 per cent.

James Urquhart, who has been laid
up for some time with rheumatism in
his hand, received a telegram yester
day from his daughter, Mrs. J. W.
Hays of Portland, stating that they
were becoming anxious about him, Not
having heard from him In some days.
He Immediately wired back that he
was O. K., and would write as soon as
his hand became better. "Jim" as he
is popularly known through the west.
Is one of the pioneer operators on the
coast, and his many friends here hope
he will soon be able to take his old
place back at the key.
J. W. Thompson, organist at the M.
E. church, wishes to take a few more
pupils in music, piano or organ. Ad

and ending July 7th: Number of days
attendance, 473; number of days absent,
12; number of times tardy, 8; total num

ber belonging, 8; average daily attend
ance, 8. Pupils enrolled Willie, Minnie
and Charlie Bartoldas, Jennie and
Leonard Lindholm, Minnie, Lottie and
Henry Hess, Louis and Andrew Hay-
seth. Pupils not absent nor tardy dur
ing the term: Willie Bartoldas, Minnie

MEETING OF FOOTBALLERS.
Portland's Crack Players to Be Here
Next Saturday.
The Astoria Football Club met last
evening, President Flnlayson in the
chair and Mr. F. W. Gunn, secretary,
After the reading and adoption of he
minutes of the preceding meeting, the
secretary read a statement of re
ceipts and expenses of the recent ath
letic games. The report, which was in
every respect satisfactory, was adopt
ed. '
It was decided, upon motion, to play
the second match of the series between
teams representing America and Great
Britain on next Tuesday evening.
The question of giving a series of
three concerts under the auspices of
the club, was discussed at length, the
object being to donate the proceeds to
assisting the Library Association in
its scope of usefulness. -The following
committee was appointed, to report at
the next meeting: W. E. Tallant, J. R,
Rathom, W. W, Rldehalgh, A. Barthol
omew, R, Gibson, and the president and
secretary.
It was decided to adopt light blue and
white as the club colors.
P. W. Weeks was elected a member
of the executive committee, and ac
cepted the honor in a few appropriate
words. -
President Flnlayson, in recognition of
his services to the club, was presented
with a life membership ticket, and feel
ingly responded to the compliment.
A letter was read from Mr. Emmons
of Portlend stating that the metropol
itan team would be in Astoria on the
22d Inst. Another letter was read from
First Sergeant J. P. Edmunds of Fort
Canby, In reply to an invitation to play
the Portland team a Rugby game on
the 23d inst, stating that It would be
Impossible to get the men together for
that occalon, several of them having
met with slight accidents while prac
ticing. The secretary was instructed
to notify the Portland club to that ef
fect, and that satisfactory arrange
ments for the association game on the
22d Inst, had been made.
After electing two new members-
Mark Warren and Otto Prael the club
adjourned sine die;
