THE DALLY ASTORLAN, ASTORIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, JULY 12 18J3. Viewing the 'White City. Chicago, June 28th, 1SS3. Editor Astorlan: Today I varied my Bight seeing considerably and in so do lng have walked an amazing number of miles, but as it has been a cool day for this place I have not felt more un comfortable than on other days with half the exertliM. I looked through the children's building, which Is a very Interesting place. On the first floor is a general play room for the older chil dren, from four years upward. Here one can see the boya and girls going . V. ..... . 1. ..11 i . . . A..Mnl . 111. 1111 UUgll U.11 BUI IB ul iivunanuB, wim every convenience and comfort. They seem to enjoy the novelty of It and It certainly Is a benefit to tliem. There is a gentleman In charge- who is com petent for the place and there can be no danger o -their being hurt while un- , dor his care. All. day. long there Is a jolly crowd of merry makers In this department. This room occupies the center of the building. On the south side Is the lecture room, also the kitchen garden, where little girls are taught good substantial home cooking. On the north side are" two large rooms for the babies. The partition is of glass to permit every one to see inside the room, and It Is a -charming sight indeed. First are the toddlers. Their room Is furnished with a row of little white cribs all arouhd the wall and every conceivable appliance Is here for their pleasure and they seem to be per fectly happy In their temporary home Next come the little babies. They are of all ages from a few months up to a year and a half old. This room Is full of little things conducive to the com fort of baby life. Here are several of the sweet faced nurses always busy either amusing the -little ones or rock ing them to sleep. It Is often the case that one nurse, while rocking one baby on her lap ,wlll also be swinging two of the little cradles. The room is the picture of daintiness, the . swinging cradles are white with gilt trimmings and over the head of each Is a white muslin canopy draped up with a large yellow bow. When you get ' glimpses of curly golden heads nestled down on these dainty pillows and the little hands like pink rose petals that have fluttered down on the white counter pane, you can't help thinking that the picture is complete, while the . little dreamer, over in the "land of nod,". Is utteVly oblivious to all the turmoil go ing on around him. .j No one Is allowed in the rooms ex cepe those to whom the babies belong. The little ones are checked just as any small package would be and kept all day for the small of twenty-five cents. The second floor contains the kinder garten and the room for the deaf mutes. These little unfortunates are of about two years of age. . ' There are twenty of them and the teachers are teaching them to talk just by learning the motions of the lips and tongue. On the roof is a play ground, but the sun beams down very hot here and the children prefer the play room below. Just ft few steps away Is the women's building and though I had spent more than a day In It already I could not resist going In again to enjoy the many beautiful things to be seen there.. It Is a perfect wonderland of beautiful pieces of work, done by women of every station in life, from the savage to the queens of foreign lands, and by no mean9, Is the least done by our own queens in this glorious republic. , In the United States department Is to be seen some of the most beautiful work that can be found any where. This department covers a wide range, from dainty hand embroideries oh all sorts of fabrics, beautiful laces and decorated ' china which compares- with any from other countries, to patents for all sorts of household utensils and does "not stop there either. Here is a detachable .harness which is a great thing in case oi a run away horse. It works Instantaneously and perfectly; at the same time the horse Is set free the break is thrown on and the wheels stop. Passing from , this - Interesting place through the throngs of moving people I came to the fisheries building, There are many curious fish to be seen here from almost as many countries. The Oregon display is very good and is presided over by Mf. Tlmmlns who is the right man to be there. Today the seventy-two pound salmon, the lord of the Columbia river, Is the great attrac tion and crowds of curious people are constantly coming to admire him. When the Ice melts he is to be divided among the press men, who no doubt Will fall in love with Oregon, as It is said to be a fact that to reach a man's heart you must please his palate. Mr. Timmins presents Oregon badges to the visitors from his state and they are ex pected to wear thejn, which Is a very nice idea. After going through a part of this building I found my way out and across the Island to the Horticul tural building. Here again are many good exhibits, but I can't help think ing that Oregon's is the-best. Doctor Lewis Is In charge and I imagine Is kept busy answering questions. There are many Oregon names on the regis ter and several from Astoria. It Is amusing to sit here and see the ex pressions of amazement on people's faces as they look on the productions of our state. And we" can't wonder at It when we see the immense potatoes and other vegetables, and pears weigh ing over four pounds and other fruits corresponding in size. MATTIE PALMER. Captain K. Lieutenant Carlln of the Monterey was one of the officers on the United States ship Vandalla when that vessel was wrecked In the terrible storm at Samoa a few years ago, and there are several survivors of the awful catas trophe who owe their lives to his he roic bravery. The following communication will ex plain Itself:' "'..': Astoria, July 10. .1893. Editor Astorlan: From a personal though hasty sur vey of the flow of .water Into and through - the reservoirs from Bear Creek and from the spring under and near the larger reservoir, made today, I am satisfied that the bad odor of the water during the past few days is caused by a change of the current In the main pipe and by the storing up of the sediment; in the distributing res ervoir as the water plunges into It from the upper one. - The sediment odor will disappear In a few days, probably. No sew age, drainage, or other seriously bad matter" is In, or gets Into, the water In either reservoir. .A few days of unmo lested flow of the water will prove my assertions. In the meantime the super intendent, Mr. Smith, will diligently wok ond remedy the cause, whatever It may be. W. W. PARKER, Chairman of Astoria Water Com mission. ' PERSONAL MENTION. . .
