The death of Captain George Flavel
removes from our midst Astoria's most
prominent citizen. For more than half
a century ho has resided, in this city,
and. has always identified ctii).elf with
every movement having for its object
the advancement of the city's inter
enia. By honest endeavor and, years of
patient industry he long ago laid the
foundation of the fortune he enjoyed
in his declining years. It was not his
privilege In early life to receive the
benefit of either a classical or thor--ouirh
commercial education. To this,
doubtless may be attributed his dls
Inclination to engage in speculations of
the issue of which ho was uncertain,
or to Invent largely In proportions
which his own Judgment did not fully
endorse. In his rough and rugged
rood from sailor boy to ship captain
and owner, he hod suffered many hard
experiences which we' can readily be
lieve enabled him to estimate at their
full value the smiles of fortune, and
naturally deterred him in advancing
years from any and every speculation
which could Impair his, after all, but
comparatively moderate fortune. In
all his business transactions with his
fellow citizens Captain Flavel was the
Boul of honor. He was faithful and
constant to his friends. I'roHjierlty
' never lifted him up In the least or
diminished the general affability, cour
tesy and civility that he had always
to all persons. A good citizen, a true
friend, a tender husband and tin af
fectionate father was luld to rest yes
terday in IIUIhIiIo cemetery In the
person of Captain George Flavel.
THE FOURTH AT ULIN1) SUHKUI.
Wind Slough, July 5. 1S93.
The Fourth of July was very appro
priately observed In this neighborhood.
The day wa fair, after the jmskIiiii
shower in tho morning, and a large
number of eopU were in attendance.
About halt past 10 o'clock the peo
ple gathered at the si'luiolhouse laden
with bountifully filled lunch baskets,
und headed by the school-children,
marched to the picnic ground, where
appropriate exercises were hold. The
exercises were well rendered and ap
preciated by Hume present. Then all
partook of the tempting morsel pre
pared by tho ladles.
At 2 o'clock the crowd again gathered
at the schoolhoiise, where footraces,
egff-rnces, three-logiuMl-ruces. boat-
races. Judging of the prettiest girl, the
best looking man. etc., took place. The
Judges were:
Mr. Nelse Horglund, Mr. Nelse Hag
lund and Mr. A. Hlllstrom. ' They de
cided that' Cecilia TnkoH was the fair
est maiden upon tho ground and Mr,
Jonas Pearson tho best looking man.
All tho while tho "small boy" kept up
a bang and a "tttt" with fire crackers.
In the evening all returned home tired
but well pleased with the exercises of
the day.
