Leav '1US ULM AN- M) h JVir.fi - r Despite the short time devoted to the preparation of the program and a still shorter time for the completion of ar. rangements, tne atnietic exercises at Smith's point grounds on the Fourth were a grand sucess, and it can be said without fear ' of contradiction that everyone who waa present spent the pleasantest Fourth of July ever seen In Astoria. In the early part of the day the attendance was not very large, v.. i .I imi uy ins iime noon arrived every train brought two or three hundred people until both stands were filled as well as the seats which had been arranged around the eldea of the grounds. Even with these additions to the seating accomodations, hundreds could not find seats. Fortunately the grass was dry, and resting on Earth's green mantle dozens, watched with un flagging interest the progress of the various games until the last event on a splendid program had been contested. The first number on the program was the shooting match between members of the Rod and Gun club. The great event the football match- was then announced. It was Bachelors s Benedicts, and was a more sclon- tificiand hard-fought game than any heretofore played this year. The sing! men were victorious with k scor of one goal to nothing. Thj .handsome medal, donated by Mr. Wag f-T ftra-fcectjrjiff. was awarded Bell for the single team, and of W. Ridehalgh and C. Addis for the Bene dicts was well worthy of mention, each acquitting himself almost faultlessly, Mr. Bell had many chances, and made but one very slight misplay. The oration of Justice Cleveland was one pecularly adapted for the oc casion. He referred to the wonderful progress of this great republic since its birth, enumerating the many great inventions of the age, and after hand. ling this portion of his subject with an eloquence born of love for his adopt' ed country, the speaker touched upon the Olympic games of old, and showed both by logic and history how well such amusements and exercises fitted the young for the great battle of life, The result of .the day's amusement I well summed up in the words of several of the oldest Astorlana pres ent. "It was," they said, "the most en joyable Fourth we ever spent in (As toria." In the city there was a parade in the morning; of the G. A. R., the Scan dinavian Benevolent Society and the Finnish Brotherhood. Mr. F. D. Win ton delivered the oration from the bal cony of the Occident hotel, and MlS3 Dena Thompson read the Declaration of Independence. Th(fc races in town esulted as follows: Boys' foot race, under sixteen, from the foot of Main to Second street. First prize, John Young; second prize, Will Johnson. Girls' footrace, under thirteen, at the same place. First prize, Miss Taylor; second prize, Miss Jennie Curtis. Tender race (hub and hub) from Genevieve to Olney street. Won by No. s team. Sack race, Third street, between Gen evieve and Cass. Won by David IMc Croskey. Hos,e race, from Foster's Exchange to hydrant, and lay 200 feet of hose and get water. Won by No. l's team. Three-legged race, from Central ho tel to Foard & Stokes. Won by Ohler and Johnson. Foot race for amateurs, from Ford and Stokes' to Olney steer. Won by Mr. Sheeley. Tug-of-war at Flavel's wharf. Won by Scandinavians; Fred Oberg captain. Bicycle race from Parker House and return. First prize, Thomas Bryce; second prize, Cecil Sovey. Bicycle race against time. Won by Cecil Sovey.
