Referring to the DrltlHh Columbia nalmon season, the Conimerclal Jour nal published at Victoria, under date of June 20th, says: "The British ship Candida, 1,222 tons, )iow on the way from London to Vic toria, haa been chartered by 11. P. Kithet & Company, Limited, for mlmon to London or Liverpool. The canning Reason on the northern rivers of Brit ish Columbia open on the 15th of June, and It Is expected that the canneries on the Naas, and Skeena rivers and River's Inlet commenced putting up nockeye flsh on that date. The Fraser river canneries generally commenced j 1 about July 15th. Some of the new can nerles are rushing preparations to be ready to pack at that time. Stocks are reported very bare In England, with prices nominal and few sales being re ported. The sale of futures at $4 per cose seems unwarranted, in view of the Btrong combination of the Alaska packers' association, who have not yet flxed their price, but It Is believed that It wjll be $1.05 a dozen. The Canadian market Is reported bare, and Eastern houses write that they want supplies as early as possible this season. In the face of a strong situation, Brltlnh Co lumbla salmon Is being sold at (Inures lower than common grades of Alaska flsh. In April, when the standard brandn were being sold nt $4.80 a case nunc dealers were offering now brands for $4.20. The general condition of all the salm on markets warrants the Journal's statement that low prices are unwar ranted. The British Columbia packers might fairly expect more than $4 per case, at which price It appears milmon has been sold for future deliv ery. If our neighbors were not ex cluded from the American market, by the tariff, they might secure better prices, As It is they are largely de pendent on British consumers, and are thus compelled to compote directly with Alaska salmon, exported by way 'f San Francisco. Our people continue to prefer the Columbia river product, and readily pay for It higher prices than are asked for the Alarka fish. The superior quality of our salmon, and the core observed in packing it are under stood and appreciated In the great markets of the West and the East. Ow ing to the enterprise of our cannery men, Columbia river salmon is offered at prices which enable people of mod erate means to buy it. All things con sidered It Is the best and cheapest can ned food placed on the market. It la rich and wholesome. The method adopt ed by the packers retains all the gcml qualities of the llsh and renders It ready for immediate use. This ought to be a strong recommendation for it in the East where hot weather adds so greatly to the burdens of liouse hfeiung. On this account as well as Its genera lmerlts, our salmon should be a favorite at breakfast and luncheon in ail places where sultry weather pre vails.
