The course pursued by Dr. Briggs is
eliciting many strong words of approv
ul from press and pulpit. In Portland,
on Sunday, the Rev. II. V. Roninger, a
ronBTeeatlonal pastor said: "For
teaching In his Inaugural address two
years ago that tho Bible, the church
and the reason are three concurrent
channels of divine, authority, and for
denying in common with the great ma
jority of Hebrew scholars, the tradi
tional authorship of certain books of
the Old Testament and the verbal in
i plratlon or Inerrancy of the Bible, Dr.
Briggs has been expelled from, the
Presbyterian church and Union semi
nnry, and is put under the ecclesiasti
cal ban. In doing this the Presbyterian
r-eneral assembly has not merely a
quarrel with pr. Briggs, Wut with the
Christian scholarship, and we might
say, with the civilization of tho age.
The great majority of Christian schol
ars In England and Scotland and on
the continent agree with the conclu
sions of Dr. Briggs. In. this action we
might well ask: Has not tha Presby-
. terlan general assembly cut Itself off
from ecumenical Christian thought and
from the Holy Catholic church through
out the world?"
Mr. Gladstone should have got some
journalist to "boll down" the Irish
home rule bill and then rushed It
through parliament. . He should have
then passed soma ultra radical meas
ures and awaited defiantly the decision
of the house of lords regarding them.
The tardy mothod now pursued is de
moralizing the premier's supporters.
Nobody objects to the showing up of
fraudulent pensioners wherever they
may be found; but every patriotic citi
zen should object most-strenuously to
the Blurs against every veteran on the
pension roll that are being printed In
tho democratic- press. '
In tho Lizzie. Borden trial, the Judge
will charge the Jury today. Tho case
has been conducted with marked abil
ity and fairness, recalling the best tra
.(lltlons of tho Hay State bnr. If tho
jury disagree the prosecution will prob
ably be abandoned,
