Having occasion to visit Astoria he put $2,500 in gold $20 pieces in a barrel of flour. Meantime flour fell short at Solomon Smith's, and John Hobson. who lived with him at the time, called at Mr. Lampson'a for a barrel. He took one at random and brought it home. In the evening when he opened it. out rolled the cold pieces. He and Mr. Smith were, of course, astonished, and did not know what to make of it. They gathered up the coins and put them safely away. Mr. 'Lampson returned home the same evening, and on learn ing that Mr. Hobson had got a barrel of flour, he looked around, and found that the barrel which had the gold was missing. He set out for Mr. Smith's where ho was delighted to. find his treasure intact. It may be noted that the barrel contained Chilean flour, for this slope, which now produces mil lions of bushels of wheat end exports many thousand barrels of flour, then imported flour from Chile. MRS. DR. M. E. M'COY, PHYSIC IAN AND SURGEON The committee of nine appointed last Saturday evening af the meeting of the property owners called for the pur pose of taking, steps toward regulat ing tha matter of unjust taxation have been consulting with the two assessors and it ia understood that the city and county assessments will be made on practically the same basis of - valua tions. Tha movement has mot with no opposition except from a few in- dhMiuals of communistic sentiments, who never had anything themselves, and who, jealous of thos more for tunate, show a disposition to force the latter into bankruptcy, if possible. Very few people realize how both the city and county assessments have been Increased during the post seven years. As long as there was plenty of sale for property no one grumbled, but since the. real estate market became quiet there has very naturally been a great deal of Just complaint.' The records in tha office of the county clerk and in the auditor's office contain some infor mation that is interesting and which would be. a profitable study for the assessors. In 1885 the valuation of the property assessed for the county and Btate purposes was $1,901,667.. The' taxes amounted to $41,836.67. In 1886 the assessable property was valued at $2, 111,423, making the amount of taxes $44,415.45. There was but little differ ence in 1887, the Increase in value be ing in the neighborhood of $10,000. In 1888 the figures were raised to $2,465,- 627, and in 1889 to $4,101,293. Then an effort was made to reduce the amount, and a step in the right direction was taken, the. assessor having apparently taken the view of the case that is now so plain to all. A 22-mill tax was levied on $3,416,524, but a great Jump upward was again made in the following year, a 19 1-2 mill tax being, levied on $5,- 1 160,000, and not satisfied with this, in 1892 thevaluation waa raised to $5,700,- 259. The following table will show the amount of county tax levied each year for the eight years commencing with 1885. , - , Year Amount. 1885 $41,836.37 1SS6..... , 44,445.45 1887 . 45,644.20 1888........ "". 100,620.00 1892 125,405.70 What Justification there" was for such an increase as is shown above It Is difficult to determine- ; In the city assessment a still greater increase Is found, the valuation ' being raised from $1,515,815, In 1885, to $7,343,- 856 in 1891.
