TODAY'S WEATHER. Portland, Or., May 21. For Oregon a d Washington: Continued fair w .athter. Local weather for the twenty-four h'.urs ending at 5 p. m., yesterday, fi iniuhed by the U. S. Department of A (culture, weather bureau. Maximum temperature, D9 degrees Minimum temperature, 48 degrees. Precipitation, none. Total precipitation from July 1st, 1812, to date, 81.25 Inches. Excess of precipitation from July 1st 1802, to date, 8.70 Inches. We know personally a merchant Who about a year ago bought a $20,- 000 houfcb In Portland and brought about $200,000 there to use In business. Under the new law this enterpris ing man cannot be telected to civic office until he. has lived ten years In the city1. Yet a shiftless, homeless loafer, who has resided ten years In the metropolis can be elected to Its hlghestdlgnlttes. The attacks on Dr. Briggs eavor of persecution. It would seem proper, from a lay point of view, to haw abandoned the suit whenthe New York nreubVtenr acciuitted the dUtln- gulshod divine. Instead of doing so tUi general assembly sitting as a court of the Lord Jesus Christ, by a vote of 409 to 145 has declared that he must be again put on trial. "The treasury today purchased 410 G00 dunces of silver;." So says a Washington dispatch of yesterday. Now, will any one explain why, with millions of ounces of silver on hand, the treasury bought these 416,500 ounc es and paid for them In notes that are practically redeemable in gold. This question Is the key to the whole finan cial situation. The Jeff Davis funeral, which la to begin today at New Orleans and end at Richmond, is an Ul-advlsed and inap propriate demonstration. The South might wisely have allowed the confed erate louder to rest In peace. No such funeral honors have been conferred on Lee, Stonwall Jackson, or Johnston, who were all abler men than Jefferson Davis. Mr. Clorkson never made a truer prophecy than when he said the future welfare of the republican party was wrapped up In the young men of the country. Gain the votee of three-fifths of those who will cast their first votes during the next three years, and a republican president in 1896 Is assured. Since the arrival of the Infanta Eu lalle It has occurred to some that In view of the fact that she apparently injoyed the festivities In her honor, It may have been the idlotlu prepara tions made for her leceptlon, and not Ill-health that caused her to doubt the advisability of coming to the United States. Republican editors might And better use for their space than bewailing the removal of Republican olllclalg by the administration. What right have re publicans to oxpect they will be kept In office by their political opponents? Nothing like being an all-round or ator. General Harrison was as much at home In making an address to the International Y. M. C. A. as In making those to a nation which have made his fame as a statesman world-wide. TheOregonlan says "We hae. too many Immigrants, and want no more." In view of the millions of acres of uncultivated land In Oiegon and else where this statement In absurd. For the Next Thirty Davs, To meoi imporatlvo lemantls, I will ofler at such low prices on install ments, with easy payments, that This Is a bad season for seins, wheels and traps. The wheels are entirely use- ess, but they may do better in July, The gill-net Is, after all, the most rell able device for catching the royal chl- nook. Lord Salisbury is striving to convince the Irish people that they are not qualified for home rule. That position Is not creditable to him nor to those who applaud him. President Cleveland is in favor of the Geary law but opposed to Its en forcement. Such was once the atti tude of a politician as regards prohi bition. The Mississippi river seems to be as hard to control as the democratic party and it is equally as dangerous when It appears to have Its own way. Decoration day should be observed this year with patriotic ardor. It Is proper to keep the memory of the pat riotic dead green In our souls. Governor Pennoyer is in a fair way to leceive the populist nomination, that is, if there be a populist party In the next presidential contest, The canrtery business Is In good hands this year. There Is a spirit of Improvement manifest that will pro duce good results. PERSONAL MENTION. Mr. W. II. Roden, of San Francisco, Is In the city. Mr. S. W. Yet even the d readed " open switch " ts not so widely fatal as is a certain disease, which, without ceasing its activity for an instant, is daily filling hundreds of graves. What is that terrible ailment? you ask. It is Heart Diteasel "But," you reply, con fidently, " 2 haven't any heart disease my heart is all rislit." Are you sure ? Dr. Franklin Miles, of Elkhart, Ind., the distinguished specialist in diseases of the heart and nervous system, states that disor ders of the heart nre as common as those of the lungs, liver, stomach, bowels or kidneys, though often unsuspected. The reason peo ple are not aware of this important fact is because symptoms of heart disease are not usually recognized as proceeding from this organ, but are attributed to some other source. If you have shortness of breath, fluttering or palpitation, pain or tenderness in left breast, shoulder or side, oppressed or choking sensation, fainting or smothering spells, your heart is affected.
