Perplexity Among the legal Fraternity The legal fraternity are somewhat puzzled over the question of the proper course to pursue In the filing of mort gages, two laws which were apparently In opposition to each other having been passed by the last legislature, un der rather singular circumstances. Sen ate bill No. 23, which in brief pro vides for the filing of al mortgages with the county clerk, was passed by the House on the 10th of February. thta same day House bill No. 104, pro viding that chattel mortgages shall be filed with the county recorder In each county where there is such an officer, was passed by the senate. Then to add to the perplexing circumstances, both bills were signed by the president an speaker on the 17th of February. The only point of difference in the time or action on tbte measures was that the Mjnate bill wan approved on the 20th of February, whereas the House bill was not filed in the office of secretary of state (such filing being equivalent to approval) until February 22d. It thought by some of the leading lawyers that inasmuch aa both bills were passed on the" :same day, tins construction to be placed will be that they are one and the same act, and that the House bill shall apply where there a recorder of conveyances, and that under other circumstances the senate bill will be operative. ALONG THE WHARVES. Two more hugte spars were placed on board the Western Belle yesterday, The bark Geo. S. Homer Is now out 140 days from New York for this port and is exrAx'ted dally. The work Is to be done by Assistant of the Coast Survey I. J. Gilbert. This Is the second season's work, and It Is expect ed the work wlU all ibe completed this summer. INFERIOR GOODS. The only safe way for purchasers Is to insist on having the genuine article, and not allow themselves to be swln died by having plasters said to be "Just as good," or ' containing superior in- gredtents," Imposed upon them. These are only tricks to sell inferior goods that no more compare with Allcock s l'orous Dusters than copper does with gold. One trial of Allcock s Forous 1'liiHters will convince the most skep Ileal of their merits. The eminent Henry A. Mott, Jr., rn.D., F. U. 8., late Government C'hem ' 1st, certifies: "My Investigation of Alleock's Por ous Plaster shows It to contain valua ble and essential Ingredients not found In any other plaster, and I find it su perior to and more etneient tmtn any other plaster." Ask for Allcock's, and let no solicita tion or explanation Induce you to ac cept a substitute. A Sure Cure for Pile. A good illustration of the drift of thvj ocean currents has been, supplied nays the Marine Journal, by a New York man, Mr. Mlddlekoop, who, when a passenger on the steamship Dldam, on September 8th last, In latitude 48 N and longitude 40, threw over a bottle containing a card bearing his address and offering JG to whoever returned It. few days ago he received back the card, stating that the bottle was picked up on April 6th, off the island of Barra, one of the Hebrides, on the north of Scotland. It had taken seven months to drift the two thousand miles or so, but it added proof to the statements f the Hydrographlc Office that the rift from such a position as that In which the bottle was thrown overboard Is inevitably In the direction It took. The proceedings agulnst the Alice Hlanchard, libeled for $5000 by the Or egon Pacific for salvage for helping her off the shore of the bay opposite Newport, and for $10,000 by two fisher men who boarded her off the bar and piloted her Into Yaqulna Bay, will be heard on the 6th of June.
