The doc tors termed it eciema. l nua given up all hopes of ever being cured, when Brandredth's Pills were recommended to me. The steamer Scotia will sail from San Francisco this morning with a miscellaneous cargo of merchandise for Astoria. The steamship Oregon sailed for San Francisco yesterday morning. From this port she took 2770 cases of salmon 1169 bundles of shooks, 155 sacks of oysters, and a considerable quantity of miscellaneous merchandise. The steamship Columbia arrived yes. terday from San Francisco. She had a large number of passengers and some 400 tons of freight for various Astoria merchants. The steamer Augusta Is due to sail for Tillamook this morning. The Western Belle is still lying along side Kinney's dock. The spars which are to be shipped to New York are con sidered the finest lot that ever was shipped from the Northwest. The British ship Torrisdale has ar rived In San Francisco from Newcastle, N. S. W., after a passage of 97 days. She brings a cargo of coal. The trip of the vessel to this port will be remem bered by quite a number of the crew, Twelve of them refused to do duty, and Captain Buchanan ordered them put in Irons. The trouble occurred March 1st. It was with difficulty that the men were Ironed, but the job was successfully carried out. Six of the crew were left In Irons for three days, five of them suffered confinement for two days, and one gave in after the first day Tha new Eckley propellor has been demonstrated to be a grand success, and the Inventor is more than, pleased In consequence. A contest was had on Friday last In San Francisco between two boats, one furnished with the new propellor, and one with the old, and tha result was a great victory for the recent Invention. The contestants were the Pacific Mall Company's launch and the Onyx, the latter only 24 feet long, 4 feet, 9 Inches beem, and 3 feet draught. She Is driven by a tiny en gine with a cylinder 4 Inches In dlam eter, and 6-Inch stroke, and her pro- pel'or Is 20 Inches In diameter. The Mall Company's launch Is a far larger boat than the Onyx in every way, with a larger bollsr and cylinder, and a 28-lnch propellor. There was no comparison between the boats as far as size and power goes, and the crowd were Inclined to think Mr. Eckley had overestimated the value of his new In vention. While waiting for the Pacific Mail launch, the Onyx gave an exhibition of her ability to stop and back while going at full speed ahead. Several trials were made, and In each the boat stopped In less than her own length and would turn from full speed ahead to full speed astern In nine seconds. When the Mall Company's1 launch ar rived the two were hooked on stern to stern, tha tug began, and for a couple of minutes neither had any advantage. The engineer of the Onyx then left his engine and moved further aft, thus sinking the propellor deeper Into the water, and giving It a better hold. This move settled it, and Blowly the big boat was tawed across the dock amid loud cheers from the crowds on tha wharves. The boats were then hitched bow to bow for a stern pull, and the Onyx again proved more than a match for the largerboat, towing her clear across the dock. In speed, the Onyx likewise proved her super iority, and In spite of the fact that she hna a very poor model, ran clear around her opponent and beat her back to the dock In a race of half a mile. The merit of the new propellor lies In he fact that both slip and drag Is re duced to almost nothing. No matter how fast1 the steamer may be running, there is hardly a ripple behind her. With the old propellor Bhe made six knots, but with the new one she makes over nine knots. CAN THE PEERS BE INTIMIDATED So far as can be seen at present, there Is about as much chance of an effective agitation being organized against the House of Lords in Eng land as there Is of extracting sunlight from cucumbers. The lout agitation against the peers was on the subject of the county franchise, upon which there practically was little or no diff erence of opinion, every one being In favor of It, the point at issue being whether or not household suffrage in the counties should be accompanied by a redistribution of seats, or whether It should precede . redistribution. There was no doubt as to the sincerity and the earnestness and preponderating force of the meetings against the Lords; but no sooner did the Conserva tives venture to organize meetings of their own In support of the Peers than the agitation practically collapsed, and the qutwtlon was Bettled by agreement between the parties. What made this the more remarkable was that the Conservatives did not hold one meet ing for five that the Liberals held; but It was recognized then that an agita tion to be successful from the point of view of Intimidation should be practic ally without opposition. Reasoning from the data of that lost campaign against tho House of Lords, the Home Rulers are foredoomed to failure If they hnso their plan of campaign upon the prospect of successful agitation.' The odds at this moment are heavy that the Unionists could organize Just as many monster demonstrations In favor of the Peers as the Home Rulers could get up against them; and when public meetings disagree the House of Lords decide. The national commission today heard reports of the committee on Sun day opening resolution., but action was deferred until tomorrow. REDUCING FREIGHT RATES. New York, May 22. Thtt Canadian Pacific Railway today reduced rates on freight between this city and San Francisco to $1 per hundred pounds, for the cheapest class of freight, and $2.76 pvr hundred pounds for the high est. This Is done to meet the reduqtlon on the same class of freight made last week by the Southern Pacific Railroad, Th'j new rates of the Canadian Pa cific are ten per cent, lower than itiose of Its rival. KATHERINE JOHNSEN. Oregon's fruit exhibit in Hortlcult ural hall Is under the superintendence of Mr. Guy Lewis, of Union county, who In the absence of the. commission. er, acts as executive. It Is almost across the passage from Washington's exhibit, Oregon, Idaho and Washington's- ex. hlbit ' of Northern fruits is without doubt the finest display of Northern fruits at the exposition. In variety and amount of fruits they are very much the same and It will be only a question of quality and fiavar with the judges. Oregon displays fifty-one varieties of winter apples and they are very much admired. A prime tree of one year's growth Is the wonder of all. The dls. play of prunes and evaporated fruits Is very fine and the variety of prunes excels anything as yet displayed. The egg plums are very large and tempt ing. Oregon's generosity was checked a few days ago. It seems Mr. Lewis had been giving the reporters and other jieople tastes of the fruits which he thought would keep but little longer, The authorities Informed him that If he was found giving any more fruit away they would put him under arrest. As a consequence the fruit Is allowed to spoil and It is missed by the hungry reporters.
