The doubts of Captain Myers of the Danube as to the cause of death having been small-pox In the case of the China man on whose account the steamer was quarantined, seem to be well-founded, It Is a fact acknowledged by all repu table physicians that It Is a most un usual occurrence for a small-pox suf ferer to die in an ealry stage of the disease, and It has not yet been shown upon what symptoms Dr. Wheeler de clared the case to be one of small-pox. Physicians as well as others are falli ble, and whilst there might have been an error In diagnosis so far as this was concerned, it la but Just that the facts should be known with regard to the Bymptoms. This being bo, it Is now in order for Dr. Wheeler to declare upon what grounds he determined the case one of small-pox. The politicians are not scrambling for the vacant police commlsslonershlp, partly for tho reason that there are no accompanying emoluments, and In a large measure owing to the fact that the retiring member had been elected for the short term, which expires at tho close of the present year. The only names "prominently mentioned" thus far are those of John Kopp, Fred Salz, Pete Braon and Chris Vejcns. . Other names have, as n matter of course, been casually mentioned In this con nection, but as the source whs not an authoritative one, no Importance was attached to the suggestions that the necessary qualifications were possessed by those included In the latter category. Mr. Crosby can doubtless be depended upon to nominate a man fitted In every respect for tHe position. This Is surely an age of rapid transit. It may soon be possible to make the Journey from Astoria to Queenstown In ten days. At present the trip from hero to CI)lcago Is made in less than four days. The run from Chicago to New York takes nineteen hours. From New York to Queenstown in the Cam pania occupies five days, seventeen hours and forty-two minutes. The act ual traveling time, ns thus outlined, Is not many hours In excess of the Hen days. The ups and downs of Astoria In railroad matters are nothing to those which befell Duluth, which was desig nated by congress and better still, by Jay Cook, as the eastern terminus of the Northern Paclflo railroad, but was bambooEled out of that distinction by St. Paul. Duluth, however, triumphed over adversity and has now more wheat than was ever warehoused In any city. In a like manner shall Astoria shine out In due season. In Portland Tammany has carried the day. While Murphy and Markley were telling President Cleveland how to fill the Oregon ofllces, the Tammany braves have succeeded In nominating the democratlo ticket as well as the city committee. This movement In the rear will probably result in the speedy retreat of Murphy and Markley. Mr, For the Next Thirty Dajs, To meoi iniperativo tlemands, I Avill offer at such low prices on install ments, with easy payments, that Murphy'a prospects of being United States district attorney are also proba bly blighted. If floods continue to disturb the bus iness district of Portland, the best thing the merchants could do would be to pull up stakes and come to Astoria, where they would enjoy the amplest facilities for domestics and foreign trade, with no liability to have the lower stores of their warehouses sub. merged. The Northern Pacific is In a fair way to fund its entire floating debt and have J5,000,000 to spare for contlngen cles. The readiness with which Mr. Rockefeller and others have sub- scribed for $7,000,000 of the proposed issue speaks well for the company's credit. PERSONAL MENTION. Mr. W. H. CHECK THE FIRST APPROACH Of rheumatism, and further attacks may bo escaped, if proper precautions u gainst exposure are taken, and there be no hereditary predisposition. Un fortunately, people who ultimately be come chronic sufferers, too often neg lect the trifling twinges and premoni tory stiffness which herald the advent of this agonizing malady. Among the diseases fur which Hostetter's Stomach Hitters has been found efficacious this Is one, and the medicine being perfect ly safe, It is certainly to be preferred to drugs uml for Its cure, which are frequently useless, and nothing more or less than poisonous. The substitu tion of this pleasant and pure blood depurent flr medicines Inimical to life in a slight overdone, Is a measure which may fitly be urged upon persons who desire to obtain relief safely, or who have failed to obtain It from the numerous pseudo remedies for this .dis ease In the market. It is the terror of railroad men, and the dread of the traveler. Its victims killed, horribly man gled or maimed for life are numbered by the score each year. Yet even the dreaded "open switch " is not so widely fatal as is a certain disease, which, without ceasing its activity for an instant, is daily filling hundreds of graves. What is that terrible ailment? you ask. It is Heart Diteatet " But," you reply, con fidently, "2 haven't any heart disease my heart is all right." Are vou SURE ? Dr. Franklin Miles, of Elkhart, Ind., the distinguished specialist in diseases of the heart and nervous system, states that disor ders of the heart are as common as those of tho lungs, liver, stomach, bowels or kidneys, though often unsuspected. The reason peo plo are not aware of this important fact is because symptoms of heart disease are not usually recognized as proceeding from this organ, but are attributed to some other source. If you have shortness of breath, fluttering or palpitation, pain or tenderness in left breast, shoulder or side, oppressed or choking sensation, fainting or smothering spells, your heart is affected. 'I had been troubled with heart disease for years. My left pulse was very weak, could at times scarcely feel it, excitement would weaken my nerves and heart, and fear of impending death stared me in the face for hours. Dr. Milei' Nervine and New Heart Cure are the onl v medicines that have proved of any benefit and cured me." L. M. D YEK, Cloverdale, Md. " My wife has been taking Dr. Muesr jvew Cure for the Heart. She thinks it wonderful. Slio has not been troubled with pain or smothering spells since using it. We have also used Dr. Mileif Pills, and we find them all they are claimed to be." GEO. L. FINK, Philadelphia, Pa. These and hundreds of similar testimo nials are convincing proofs of the wonderful powers of Dr. MiM New Cure for the Heart. It is effective, agreeable, and above all, SAFE.
