SKIN DISEASES.
What spectacle Is more disgusting
than that of a limn or woman with a
skin dUteupe which shows Itself In

Following are some Ideas In regard
to R. B. Dllworth's erratic actions, not
yet touched upon.
Astoria, Or., May 20. 93.
Editor Astorlan:
In one respect he strictly followed
the Lord's injunctions, he was "no re
specter of persons." Rich, and poor,
young and old, all were the same to
Mm. But did he also remember that
If he had lived what he professed, he
was to remember that "Whatsoever"
he did was to be done "in the name of
the Lord Jesus." Maybe the Presbytery
who took to themselves one of the pre
rogatives of the Almighty, in that they
read his, motives, and then gave forth
to the public that they were not "evil,"
will also tell us that he gave his kisses
In that holy and Christian manner.
Ugh! It makes every true Christian
sick at heart! That a professed leader
of a Christian people and congregation
should profane God's temple, and In
sult a congregation of chaste women by
pretending to teach them the ways of
morality and pure living!
A word as to the men who pretend
to give him a character of Christian
ity high enough to teach and preach.
If there Is one thing more entirely
beneath contempt in the character of
a man. It is the utter lack of moral
courage. Why were not these ministers
and laymen of this church brave
enough to make a well-deserved ex
ample of this man Instead of making
themselves the laughing-stocks of the
community by their pusillanimity?
How can the occupants of the pews
be kept pure and conslstant In their
lives, if the occupant of the pulpit be
impure?
This man did outrage decency ana
good morals when he showered his
kisses broadcast among the ladles of
hi pnntrreeation : and if the men of the
church, whose sanctity he has violated,
are willing to condone his grave mis
conduct, let the women show by tnelr
notions that they, at least, haye the
courage of honest convictions, and treat
him in public and private as he de-
gerves In other words, ostracize him.
It is Just such faults in a minister,
winked at and condoned by brother
ministers and laymen, that brings the
church of God, that our Savior pur
chased with His blood, Into disrepute,
onri canned many a moral man to re
main out of the church, and lead many
an honest doubter to be a skeptic.

There Is no Improvement in the salnv
on industry, and if any change was
noted yesterday, It was for the worse,
the continuance of the rough weather,
the freshet, and the enormous quanti
ties of drift consequent upon the latter
making fishing almost Impossible and
extremely dangerous when attempted
The damage to nets and traps conlln
uos, and with the prospective Increase
In the volume of water In the river this
source of annoyance Is unlikely to be
abated for Borne tlme to come. At
some points on the upper river the
dally Increase of water has amounted
to as much as eighteen Inches, and at
Portland the rise Is said to be at the
rate of one foot dally. The traps mean
while are doing almost nothing. F. M
Warren of Cathlamet Is putting up
about thirty cases dally, while many
of the up-river cannerlesarenot packing
at all. The fish-wheels are all working,
but without noticeable result in secur
ing fish. At the Dalles, it is stated, not
a single case la being packed, whereas
at this time last year the pack amount
ed to nearly 600 cases dally, the full
capacity of the canneries.
Mr. ScotcHer. who was In town yes
terday, states that at his cannery the
water is up to the floor, and that they
soon expect to work "on the upper
tnrv "
All things considered, the outlook Is
anything but encouraging, for If a
marked Improvement Is not noted
quickly, the pack for the season up to
June 1st will be 40,000 cases short.

A HOT FIGHT PREDICTED. .
Chicago, May 20.-The attendance at
the World's Fair was enormously
large today. When the gatemen re
ported at 6 o'clock the superintendent
of admission predicted that the paid
admission would exceed those of any
previous day, the opening day excepted.
The gates of the fair will be closed
again tomorrow, at least the manage
ment says so. The Judiciary committee
which has In charge the preparation of
a report on the action of the local di
rectly, ordering the return of the
money appropriated by congress and
opening of the fair on Sunday, and
will bring in two reports on Monday.
It is believed that the majority report
will oppose the Sunday opening and
that the minority will favor it. There
will be a hot fightover the matter when
It comes up for discussion.
A SCENE IN THE DEPUTIES.
Paris, May 20.-The chamber of dep
uties today had a stormy debate over

police on the first day of May. During
the course of the debate, Baudry, d'As
son the royalist, became irritated at
bedng interrupted several times in the
course of his remarks by M. Dupuy,
prime minister. When the vote was tak
en on the question the chamber author
ized the minister of Justice to prose
cute Baudin. In consequence of the
treatment to which he had been sub
jected d'Asson sent Deputuy Cassag
nac and de Bernls to demand satisfac
tion from Minister Dupuy.
