ing to effect a landing in Portland. The
Republic went up the river after send
ing her papers to the custom house.
Commencing today the Bteamer Ii
waco will leave this city hereafter for
Iiwaco at 8 o'clock. The steamer will
also run on Sundays during the sea
son, commencing tomorrow.
The Manzanita will take a supply of
coal out to the lightship this morning.
The steamer Thompson struck a 3iiag
yesterday morning on her way from
Portland, and sustained damage to her
rudder. The necessary repairs detained
her for a short time.
When the LaCamas was going
through the "cut-oft" round by the
cape yesterday afternoon her wheel got
tangled up in a net. It was two hours
before she was able to proceed.
The British bark Oimara sailed for
Queenstown for orders yesterday morn

"ART EXHIBIT."
The ladles of the library association
wish to call the attention of the pub
lic to their reception to be given ln the
library room Tuesday afternoon and
evening, May 24. Arrangements have
been made to exhibit the beautiful
hand painted china done by Miss Lalng,
of Chicago, and her Astoria class. There
are over 400 pieces ln all, of rare shapes
and designs, and of nearly every pat
tern now In use. They consist of plates
that equal in workmanship and quality
many produced in the celebrated fac
tories of Europe; Royal Worcester Jar-
diniers that would delight the heart
of the most fastidious connoisseur;
chocolate sets, cracker Jars, bonbonlers,
tea sets, trays, and numerous other
articles, all most beautifully decorated
after the celebrated Royal Berlin, Roy
al Worcester, Dresden, and Doulton
wares. As fine a collection of rare
handiwork has seldom been exhibited
anywhere on this coast, and ln this
there is an interesting and instructive
treat for Astorlans.
It is needless to add that every
thing will be done to please the visit
ors, as ln the past. Admission is placed
at the reasonable sum of 60 cents,
which Includes refreshments.
