If the statements recently made by M. d'Arsonval, the distinguished French scientist, are reliable, and there will be found few men with the har dihood to contradict him, Carlisle W. Harris, the condemned murderer of his girl wife, will lollow the route to eter nity taken by other murderers in New York since the enactment of the elec trocution law, and die not by an elec tric shock, but under the dissecting knives of the surgeons who will per form the autopsy on the body. M. d'Arsonval la probably one of the foremost authorities in the world on the effects of the electrical shock, and ho maintains that it, as administered under New York's penal laws, does not kill, but simply causes a suspension of respiration. He further asserts that a person struck by an electric shock should bo treated exactly as one drowned, and the formula which he has given to electricians has "called back to life" a number of men since its publication. M. d'Arsonval is not alone In the position that the putting of criminals to death by New York's method is a complicated, barbarous and unreliable proceeding, and Ameri can physicians are challenged to prac tice artificial respiration upon crimin als after their so-called "death." In this country It is believed by eminent authorities that these statements are very well founded, a belief based on Information obtained from persons who have received! shocks of electric cur rent equal In strength to that used in electrocuting criminals in New York. That the victim Is tortured for a great er or less length of time there can be no doubt, for the sensations under the ordeal, as described y persons who have accidentally come In contact with a powerful current, are as "the tor tures of hell." There seems now to be a possibility that but few more criminals will die under the electrocu tion law, and that tho inveBtlBatlons. of distinguished scientists In both the old and new worlds will be Instru mental In again bringing into vogue In New York tho older and Btirer meth od of taking away tho lives of mur derers by the use of a stout rope. The remarkable progress of the re public of France during the last twen ty years must be a source of alarm to the monarchies of Europe. It hits weathered storms that a few years ago would have overthrown any govern ntent France possessed. The eyes of many of the subjects of these foreign powers will be opened during the next few months by the evidences of the marvellous development of this coun try. Ihei greatest, republic that the world has ever seen. The scml-ofTlclal announcement Is made that the World's Fair will be opened on Sunday, and to the credit of Chicago be it said that the power of tho liquor men was Inadequate In the' attempt to work such a hardship on the thousands of workmen and me. chanlcs who would, had the Sunday cloning movement been successful, For the Next Thirty Days, To meet imperative demands, I will offer at such low prices on install ments, with easy payments, that have been compelled to forego tha In nocent recreation and opportunisms for Instruction incidental to a visit to the great exposition. The decision of some of the large manufacturing con cerns that In case of the closing of the fair on Sunday, they would suspend operations on the following day, no doubt was an Important factor in ds feating the scheme, but to the better Influences throughout the country cu.n be mainly attributed the credit for the decision Just reached. nnmwrntlp. nanera throughout the nnnntrv H.f oxultlnir over tha fact that there are about one hundred postmasters appointed Jail. So severe were her at tacks as to cause at times temporary delirium. All treatment had failed to relieve her, but Rftor n,inir Dr. Miles' Restorative Nervine she writes: "My record is to meat least, satisfactory. Miller.of Valparaiso, Ind., was attacked three years ago with turn of life in its worst form. It finally went to her head, and all indications were that it would result either in insanity or softening of the brtiin. Her husband thus writes: "It would be impossible for me to attempt a description of her tufleringt during all this time. She wns treated by our wry best local physicians, with but temporary benefit. She has taken four bottles of Db. Miles' Restorative Nebvink, and is cured. She hns gained twenty pounds in weight. I tell you, she often blesses you for what you have done for her."
