There is a letter at present In the postofflce with an address that is a puzzle. It came from Russia, and all that the New York postal officials could make out of it was that it was intended for some one in Oregon. Postmaster Hare, after some considerable study, deciphered the writing, however, and forwarded the missive to Its destina tion. . Buy "Pride of Japan" tea. Our own Importation: rich. Tom Foster" is getting In condition for his coming footrace with Dunham, Good Judges, upon the occasion of the last race between the -two, said that Dunham could have covered the dis tance "about thirteen yards faster," than he did, but no allowance was made for a increased speed on the part of Foster, who showed much more speed when in Victoria during the firemen's tournament. Few, probably, In this city know anything about Dunham's ability, but it is generally conceded that Foster, who was beaten about six 'feet In 11 3-5 seconds, Is 1 1-2 seconds faster for an even hundred yards. It la not likely that much money will be exchanged on the result. Ryan & Co. 637. " Free at Crow's gallery, a life-size crayon with every dozen cabinets or dered. Offet good for 30 days. Deputy Internal Revenue Collector Russ T. Chamberlain, of Portland, was In the city yesterday looking after the registration of Chinese under the new Geary law. During the early hours of the day he met with but lit tie success, and had about concluded that his efforts would be futile. Be tween 2 and 6 o'clock, however, thirty- one of them had been registered. Mr, Chamberlain expects that more of them will appear before him toworrow. In an Interview with! an 'Astorian re porter Mr. Chamberlain, In reply to questions, stated that he met with much opposition in the larger cities, and in Portland especially, where crowd of the Chinese had assembled and tried by intimidation to prevent others from registering. "Finally," he said, "we were obliged to secure the assistance of the police to disperse the crowd of highbinders. Even after they had been dispersed they posted vl dettea at different points to intercept those who wished to comply with the nmvlslons of the law." Mr. Cham berlain further stated that In Salem, The Dalles and Albany, none had reg istered, while In Eugene, Heppner and Arlington nearly all had done so. Mr. Chamberlain will go over to Chinook some time today, to interview the Chin ese in McGowan's cannery. MORTGAGEE'S SALE. It Is a fact that has been commented on considerably by visitors that this city offers no inducements in the way of places or means of recreation and sport. There is certainly no place of like Importance on the Paciflo coast, nor in fact In the whole country, which in this respect, lacks so much that has the power to charm the visiting stran ger and tempt him to remain. Sometime since, there was an Athletic Club, but that has gone; and though aquatic sports as an amusement have often been spoken of, until now the Idea has never taken any definite form. ". r It, Naif, formerly agent of the Northern Pacific, yesterday placed something before the. citizens which will not only prove novel and go to make amends for what Is now lacking, but will also be a first class ndicrliplng card for Astoria. Mr. Nolfs Iden Is to locate a large boat house at Wll liamsport. He has an option on the "Portland boat house," a splendid float 67 by 35 feet which is equipped with all manner of pleasure and excursion boats including a Naptha launch with a seat lng capacity for twenty-five people. In an Interview, Mr. Nolf stated: "My intention is to endeavor to Corm a row lng association with a certain amount of capital stock; and provided a suffi cient number o'f shares can be disposed of here, to have the boat house with Its entire eauiDments towed down the river, and to Williamsport. This ser vice can be performed by a small boat In two days . My next Idea is perhaps an eye opener," said he. I propose to look into the matter of securing a rail line to the boat house, should my efforts In forming a boat association prove successful, and I will advance the Boynton Bicycle railroad method as being economical." Mr. Nolf Is Pacific Coast Agent for the Boynton people, and points mt the ease with which the Bay railway line: could under his system be extended to double mileage at a comparatively low expense; as every other tie could be discarded, one line of rail placed in the center and the other used for the ex tension, requiring only the construc tion of an overhead guard rail, to com plete the road, the Boynton being a single-rail system. From the plans and Illustrations In Mr. Nolfs possession the Boynton seems to be the coming meth od of locomotion by rail. It certainly embodies features of merit which are recognized at the first glance, combin ing lightness of equipment with high speed and minimum friction. It is not generally known, that the Boynton people have had a line in operation for two years or more from New York City to Coney Island, as well as a suburban line twenty-two miles In length out of Boston, Mass., upon whloh speed at the rate cf 120 miles per hour has been developed. For the benefit of those who have not seen this wonderful Invention, it may be stated that the method comprises a light Bteel rail in the center of the track, which la spiked upon a heavy stringer, while the top consists of a wooden guard rail flanged with iron against each side of which play rubber trolley wheels. This trolley seldom touches perceptibly while a Bori'ton train Is In motlon.the primary princi ple Involved being similar to that mani fest in a coin When the name is rolled across the floor, the coin un lur picper guidance maintaining an upright posi tion as long as sufficient force from the hand which propelled it is present. In fact the principles of gravity 0vrn lng the ordinary road bicycle ar illus trated in the Boynton method. Steam or electricity can ba amploy-l as a tno tlve power. BenJ. W. Pond, for eigh teen years examiner of patenta cover ing railway appllanoes, ut Washing ton, speaks of the .3oynton sltm In glowing terms; and predicts nt no dis tant day the construction, of a trans continental line on this bicyclo plan, that will enable passengers s make a trip from the Atlantic to tha laclflc Ocean In 48 hours.
