The Cnlan Taoinc railroad makes
good rhowing In Its annual statement.
It not only earned enough last year to
pay the Interest on Its bonds, which
amounts, In round numbers, to $10,000,
000, but It has a surplus besides of
about 12,100,000. This sum would pay
two and one-half per cent Interest on
the stock of the road, which Is about
$60,000,000. The company has nearly
$4,000,000 In cash on hand, and Is re
ported to be In condition to lend money
In Boston. No wonder that the pro
ceedings at the annual meeting were
entirely harmonious. The stockholders
very prudently re-elected Mr. S. H. H
Clark as president, and placed George
Gould In the place held by his father.
Sidney Dillon Ripley likewise takes the
place which the former president of
the road held in the board of directors,
The success of the Union Pacific Is due
to good management and economy, as
well as to the general growth of its
business. Its gross earnings, which
were $17,837,061, in 1884, had -increased
to $20,438,208 in 1890. It may be as
sume that these were considerably aug
mented last year, although the wheat
trafllo was not as brisk as In 1891, when
It was stimulated by high prices abroad
The Union Is clearly In a good post
tion to build the proposed Astoria ex
tension. It could not use its surplus
to better advantage. By building from
here to Portland it would make the
business of the Columbia river a source
of profit Instead of loss. It would ro-
gain at once much of the trafllo that
it has lost. Moreover, it would give an
impulse to wheat growing that would
be felt throughout the Inland Empire.
The company would likewise promote
the settlement of the country along the
projected line and enable Astoria to
develop the maritime and other re
sources connected with this richly en
dowed region.
There Is soemthlng irresistibly ab
Burd in the Union Faclflo and other
trunk lines halting at Portland While
the Pacific ocean with Its wonderful
commercial possibilities Is so near at
hand. There is no such absurdity In
the whole railroad system of the United
States and Mexico, A year hence peo
ple will be araaxed that the induce
ments which this region offers to rail
roads were so long overlooked.
N. E. Stevens, a painter residing at
Astoria, says yesterday's Oregonlan,
paid a visit to Portland Wednesday,
and the ltme he had was enjoyable
while his money lasted. When this
was gone he came to his senses, and as
usual In such cases, he made a com
plaint at police headquarters that he
had been robbed. He said that he
"picked up" with a box rustler In the
People's theatre and bought her a bot
tie of beer, paying for It $1. Then he
gave her two dollars more, and she left
the room. That was the last he saw ot
hor. The oflloers, however, could not
render him any assistance, and he was
left to "rustle" up money enough to
get out of town with.

The Library
Entertainment.
Whenever an entertainment Is got up
in Astoria with a worthy object In
view, success is invariable, and the
fancy fair lost evening given by the
ladles of the library, was no exception
to the rule. The evening was not far
advanced before the library room was
comfortably filled, and before long lit
tie more than standing room remained.
With the exception of one of the win
dows, which was decorated with bunt'
ing, ferns and flowers, no effort was
made to embellish the hall, all the
beautiful flowers which had been se
cured finding a ready sale among those
who attended.
Miss Powell and Miss Brodle presided
at the candy table, and proved then
selves admirably adapted for disposing
of the confections.
The flower table was beautifully dec
orated with all kinds of cut .flowers,
whose fragrance filled the air. Miss
Emma Sayre, Miss Nora Nlckersou,
Miss Alice Wood, and Miss Katie Mc
kea presided over this branch.
Mrs. A. L. Fulton, Mrs. P. L. Cherry,
Mrs. J. T. Ross. Mrs. P. A. Stokes, and
Miss Dora Badollet found ready sale
for every one of the handsome ein
rtfoidered articles In their charge, and
the tea Uble, which was also well pat
ronised, was presided over by Mrs. O.
Wlmrata, Mrs. J. T. Rogers, Mrs. S.
Elmore, and Master George Cherry.
The kodak views shown by Mr. Phil
Oook were a source of much enjoyment,
and the duties of Mr. J. R. Rathom as
narrator were discharged In a style
which lent considerably to the success
of this part of the program.
The proceeds of the affair were $55.25,
and the ladles express themselves as
highly pleased.

of the case is that Mr. II was on hit

years in the western mining country, and had
massed a fortune. If YOU have any of the
symptoms given in the foliowingtestimoniuU

From John L. Roberts, Slatington, Pa.:
"I have suffered with palpitation, irregular
puhst, fainting and mothering tpelU, pain in
thouldert, tide, and ami for over forty year.
For twelve years have been treated without
avail by prominent physicians in my neigh

stantly worse, smothering spells followed one
another, bo my life was often in danger and
I needed constant care. As my son had been
cured by Dr. Mtiti New Heart Cure, he sent
me three bottles, me nrst aose gave me
instant relief. Before using the last bottle
I was completely cured. Although seventy
five years old I feel twenty years younger.
