' We desire to draw attention to sev feral dispatches published in another column regarding the closing of the Northern Pacific railroad office. The Budget, with its great regard for the welfare of the city, and its lovte of truth, has made a misguided attempt to excite a public feeling against The Astorian, alleging that this papvr Was entirely wrong in saying the Northern Pacific offices were closed. We are sor ry to say we haw not sufficient faith in the veracity of the Budget to believe it. Is there any possible reason that the Northern Pacific should withdraw Its agency from here unless some ami cable arrangement with some other line had brtn accomplished, and what more likely than that an agreement hud been entered Into with the Union Pa cific? The Astorian, deeming this a matter of great Interest to our cltlaens, made it public, but we defy any one to show the least bias against the North ern Pacific. Ttrts first intimation that Mr. Stone was the Northern Pucltlc agent, came through that reliable sheet, the Budget. We aite delighted to learn that the Northern Pacific will still con tinue Its office here. If you look at any object through green glasses, that obJVct will appear green also; so to the Jaundiced eye of the editor of the Budget, Everything looks yellow. The waiter supply Is discussed by jour nals all over the country. ThVs contam ination of water In use In the towns and cities is the rule. There is no great city that can boast of water that is absolutely pure. Thvj closest ap proach to it Is suld to U Liverpool, which draws upon a little river in the Welch mountains. The crusade for the purifi cation of New York's drinking water Involves thb destruction of thousands of dollars' worth of property, and the expenditure - of a fabulous sum of money by that city. Such a crusade has, however, been decided upon as necessary in order to supply the mill ion and a half of residents with pure water and prevent, it possible, the ap proach of the; cholera, . Thvj drastic measures are the reflex of the appre hension which Eastern cities look for ward to, vli: the .Extreme) summer heat and the importation of cholera. The members of the South Carolina congregation which voted to expel the daughter of a widow from church be cause she was compelled to work at a telephone exchange several hours on Sunday, must feel proud of their brand of iVillglon. The southern governors who were only the other day to devise means to attract people to their states might study this case. The authorities of Chicago should do all that (a regally possible to prevent the extortionate practices of boarding house keepers, shopkeepers and other tradespeople during the Exposition. There are signs that these practices will go on to an extent which will not onlv dlsonrflt th rltv hi.t m4.iii.1v' , ' For the Next Thirty Days, To meet imperative demands, I will offer) at such low prices on install ments, with easy payments, that impair the success of the fair. I The rain of the past two months and the present and prospective condition y of the county roads are a powerful . . . . , argument in support of thE portable saw-mill idea recently advanced by a I correspondent. There are symptoms that the German Emperor means to attend the World's Fair at Chicago, but Intends to do so mysteriously. He has, however, been too much photographed to rvadtly es cape recognition. Times were different when the late John A. Dlx stent that famous tele- grom "If -any man attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot" If asked to designate the politician who has fallen furthest and struck hardest during the last twelve months, few men would hesitate to name David B. Hill. Thoughtful people observe that a rail road from Astoria that would tap 'the Willamette valley at Albany would cause Portland some concern. FUNERALS. E. W.
