Minimum temperature, 48 degrees. Precipitation, .02 Inch. Total precipitation from July 1st, 1892, to date, 75.52 inches. Excess of precipitation from July 1st, 1892, to date, 7.56 Inches. RAILROAD ROUTES TO ASTORIA. There are three routes by which the Union Paclflo may build to Astoria the Ooble, thu St. Helens, and the Hllls boro. Railroad mvm express opinions on the merits and demerits of each. We shall give briefly what Is sold of each, not all that is said, for that would ex ceed the limits of this article. The GobKj or river route has been regarded with favor Ue cause the grades are easy and the path straight, or nearly so. The Northern Pacific track from Ooble to Portland covers nearly half the way, and is in all respects satisfac tory. Surveys and general observations indicate that the track might be en tended With like satisfaction so for us trafflo facilities are concerned. There are no hills nor mountains in the way. No wide rlwrs nor streams would re tard construction or add to its expense. The track would find easy entrance to the city and could be extended without difficulty to Flavel or to meet thv Cal ifornia North Shore railroad when in due course that is extended aloag the Oregon coast to the mouth of the Co lumbia. It Is urged on the otlter hand that this route is beet adapted for the Northern Pacific, which already owns the track from Portland to Qoble where its railroad ferry connects the road with Kalama, whence there is unbroken connection with the main line of the system. If the Union Paclflo were to build from Portland to Astoria along the river, Its track would parallel Unit of trm Northern Paclflo to Ooble, It Is nvsver desirable to compete in thlh way with a rival line. In this instance, the disadvantage to the Union Pacini would be still greater in cose the North ern Pacific extended Its own track tc Astoria. Then for upwards o'f 100 mihjir would be seen two railroads competing for passenger and freight traffic with steamboats which would endeavor tc take all they could from both. More over, it is urgv.nl that the local businebs on the Qoble route would be light. The track from Portland to Qoble has not developed much way traffic, nor is there muoh to be expected from the country between that place and Astoria until the lumber business regains some of its old time prosperity. It is observed that the Northern and the Union Pa clflo might operate a single railroad from Portland to Astoria on a joint ownership basis, but such agreements seldom work will and In this Instance is practically out of the question. The St. Helens route has not received much attention, but it undoubtedly has merits and may find favor in the vycs of the Union Paclflo. It this route Is adopted, the Union Paclflo would build along or near the south shore of the Columbia from Portland to St. Helena a distance of 27 miles. From St. J Mens the track would be constructed to Vernonia, and thence by the Neha lein and Lewis and Clarke route to Astoria. This route would place the Union Paclflo In a good position to cross the Columbia by bridge or ferry with the purpose of building to the Sound, whenever the development of that re glon would warrant It In doing so. It For the Next Thirty Days, To meet imperative demands, I will offer at such low prices on install ments, with easy payments, that would, give the company ready access to the coal fields of the Nehatem Val ley, and to the great forests of Colum bia and Clatsop counties. It would pro mote the settlement of a productive country, which needs only railroad fa cilities to raise in abundance and profit ably, hops, fruits and vegetables. Dairy. ing would likewise flourlnsh and would add largely to th business of the steel highway. This route would likewise enable the Union Pacific railroad to construct its track with equal facility to Astoria and the Flavel peninsula, while eventually the track might be so extended as to meet the San Fran cisco and North Pacific railroad in its advance northward along the Cali fornia and Oregon coasts. In adopting this route, the Union Pa cific could turn to account thfe sur veys that have been made in the Ne- halem valley as well as the grade and trestto that have been constructed. It would keep clear of the Southern Pa clftc territory at Hlllsboro and would not be In the way of any extension which that company may make In that locality. The third route Is that which the As torla and Eastern intended to build either to Hlllsboro, where it would meet the Southern Pacific or in the dilution of Oswego. From a general point of View, there are no drawbacks to this route, but it is obviously not as well adapted for Una Union Pacific as the one by St. Helens, which gives the com pany much undisputed territory and is invested with great possibilities. HENRY WAKD BrJISUri lilt. Attempt at Suicide. It Might Hart Been Prevented. From the Boston Post. While the walks in the Publio Garden were crowded yesterday afternoon about 4.30 o'clock, people near the entrance gates it the corner of Beacon and Charles streets were horrified to see a man suddenly plunge knife repeatedly into his throat and fall to the ground. W bile waiting for a conveyance an officer questioned the would-be suicide, who was n bout 60 years of age, as to his name, address, jnd reason for wishing to end his life, but the Euim steadfastly refused to give any infor mation regarding himself, lie was taken to 'he Massachusetts General Hospital and surgical attendance given him. Although weuk from loss of blood it is probable ho will recover. About 9 o'clock last eight a hospital attendant got a little information from him. He said his name was Samuel D , and that he came some weeks ago from New Brunswick. The last few days hit head kat fell queer, and he has been wan dering about the city, not knowing which way to turn. What impelled him to commit his rash act he was unuble to say. The above is the familiar but terrible story of the results of mental derangement caused by overstrain of the nervous system. People who have dimness, headache or 6kjI- 1 ache, or who are troubled with melancholy or detpondent feelings, are already well on the road which leads to insanity and raicuie.
