Mayor Crosby has signed the antl gambling ordinance, and It is now In order for those who unanimously voted for this law to see that it is made operative. The council will doubtless demon strata their sincerity by giving the or dinance just passed an honest trial. There was a proposition to Intro duce an ordinance to license gambling. 'Strong objection waa made to its in traduction and passage by those who asked a further trial of prohibitory law. They now have tlrts law. All that re mains to be done is to execute it. There i&ems to be a disposition on the part of some to condemn the coun ell In advance, by assuming that they are playing false, and that they had no intention of giving the ordinance a fair trial when they unanimously paasvd it. This Is an injustice to the council. The councilmen are representative cit izens of this city of Astoria. ' When the council becomes convinced, afttsr a fair trial, that the anti-gambling ordinance ia a failure they will be ready to substitute some other measure that will secure better re sults. When the council decided that the business interests of the city would be advanced by making saloon pay a special tax In the form of a license, they passed the necessary ordlnanoe and enforced it. If the council And that an attempt to prohibit gambling falls, and that It has a corrupting Influence with offi cials whose duty it is to enforce the lan without fear or favor, It is fair to sa they will be ready to try another plan. Further trial of prohibition backed b the promised effort of its advocates, will prove a failure. The council may become convinced that money would better be In ttu city ttVMisury than in the pockets ol those who, have obtained it by violating the law, and will use it to enable thbm to continue violating it. Business is business, and It takes coin to pay policemen. , The question Is should the solid busi ness men of this city be compelled to put all the mony in the city treas ury to pay for the enforcement of laws. Or should those who make the trouble and expeiuM be made to contribute to the support of law and preservation of peace and good order. STOCKHOLDERS' MEETING.
